Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates Renewable Natural Gas Facility in Nebraska

Aria Energy, a Michigan-based renewable energy company recently celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony for their newest Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility at the Waste Connections-owned Butler County Landfill in David City, Neb. on Friday, July 26.

Aria Energy constructed, owns and operates the project processing and purifying up to 1,000 cubic feet per minute of Landfill Gas into pipeline quality RNG. The RNG is transported to the interstate pipeline through Black Hills Energy’s distribution system. The RNG is sold to Constellation with an intended use by Constellation’s customers as fuel for natural gas vehicle fleets.

Renewable Natural Gas Close To Taking Off In U.S.

Renewable natural gas—methane collected from waste and manure—is a popular source of energy in Europe, but in the United States, it has yet to establish itself as a viable alternative to fossil fuel gas. Thanks to tax incentives and improving technologies, however, companies are making increasingly wider inroads into this segment of the renewable energy industry.

Earlier this month, New York became the latest city to join a growing network of 530 fueling stations featuring renewable natural gas (RNG) that are run by a T. Boone Pickens company, Clean Energy Fuels.

Renewable Natural Gas Market Surpasses 100-Project Pinnacle in North America

The North American renewable natural gas (RNG) industry has now topped 100 operational facilities, according to a findings from the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition).

With the addition of three recent facilities, the 101 RNG production sites across the continent equate to nearly 150% growth over the past five years from the 41 projects built between 1982 and 2014, says the coalition.

“Increased RNG development and deployment leads to greater adoption of the renewables we use to drive, and heat and power our homes and businesses,” comments Johannes Escudero, the RNG Coalition’s co-founder and CEO. “We join our members and all users of RNG in celebrating this milestone, which is a great achievement for sustainability and for decarbonizing our gas and power systems.”

Can Renewable Natural Gas Actually Compete With Diesel?

For truck fleets looking to cut fuel expenses and reliance on diesel — and to meet increasingly stringent emissions standards — renewable natural gas is becoming a hot commodity. There’s also the perk that comes from California’s low carbon fuel standard and the federal Renewable Fuel Standard incentivizing the alternative fuel.

Clean Energy Fuels, a company started years ago by oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, is growing its presence in the space through its Redeem brand RNG and nationwide natural gas fueling station network — with New York City becoming the latest market to join up. The company is tapping into its existing network on compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas fueling stations to deliver Redeem.

Brightmark Energy to Convert 90,000 Gallons of Dairy Waste Per Day into Transportation Fuel

Brightmark Energy, a San Francisco-based waste and energy development company, announced today that it has purchased an anaerobic digester northwest of Madison, Wisconsin that will convert 90,000 gallons per day of dairy waste from three local farms into biogas and other useful products. After planned installation of gas upgrade equipment is completed, the project is projected to produce enough renewable natural gas (RNG) to replace at least 50,000 MMBtu of conventional natural gas each year. That is enough fuel to travel 1,270,000 miles1 in a compressed natural gas (CNG) bus, or from San Francisco to New York and back over 200 times. Brightmark Energy purchased the digester from Clean Fuel Partners, which will continue its work on the project by providing operations and maintenance support.
