Cowboy Clean Fuels Partners with Mercuria for 10-Yr RNG Offtake
Cowboy Clean Fuels (CCF) has entered a ten-year offtake agreement with commodity trader Mercuria for the sale of renewable natural gas (RNG), according to a press release.
The agreement covers an initial ten-year time frame in which Mercuria will purchase 5 million MMBtu equivalent of environmental attributes generated at CCF's Triangle Unit Project in Wyoming and distribute them to its global customer base.
Montauk Renewables Outlines 2025 RNG Revenue Targets amid EPA Regulatory Impacts
CEO Sean McClain highlighted that the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) delay of the 2024 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) compliance deadline has affected the renewable natural gas (RNG) industry. However, Montauk has zero exposure to the 2024 compliance waiver due to prior sales of all 2024 D3 RINs.
The company has committed to transferring most of its RINs inventory from 2025 RNG production at prices approximating the D3 RIN Index.
Clean Energy Fuels Expects Better RNG Demand After Tariff and 45Z Clarity
Clean Energy Fuels expects demand for renewable natural gas from trucking companies in the US to pick up once there is more clarity on the Trump administration's tariffs as well as its market policies, CEO Andrew Littlefair said on the company's Q1 earnings call.
The RNG producer has seen Q1 sales dip and pointed to colder weather at the start of the year, which resulted in reduced supply while the market still awaits clarity on Trump's tariff war and further guidance on the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, with no updates published since January.
Demand Jumps for Renewable Natural Gas, RNG-Powered Trucks
Freightliner has opened its order book for fifth-generation Cascadia tractors powered by Cummins’ X15N natural gas engine.
The announcement on the opening day of the recent 2025 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Anaheim, Calif., provided a focal point for a show floor abuzz with talk of a surge in demand for renewable natural gas and RNG-powered trucks.
Biogas Tax Credit Market Stays Strong in 2025
Upon becoming law in 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”) extended the opportunity to generate investment tax credits (“ITCs”) to renewable natural gas (“RNG”) projects, incentivizing the development of new projects and enabling some projects already in the development pipeline to capture material new value. Specifically, the IRA provided for the generation of ITCs pursuant to Section 48 of the amended Internal Revenue Code of 1986 based on a percentage of eligible project costs.
Initial excitement cooled after the Treasury Department released guidance in November 2023 suggesting that the Section 48 ITC would exclude certain portions of biogas upgrading equipment from being ITC-eligible, making ITC modeling difficult for RNG developers. The Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas and the American Biogas Council led developers and other RNG industry stakeholders in seeking clarification of that guidance, resulting in finalized language specifying that equipment used to convert raw biogas into pipeline-quality RNG, including gas upgrading equipment, is ITC-eligible.
Op-Ed: RNG and Hydrogen Are Vital to New Jersey’s Clean-Energy Future
Policies that seek to mandate electrification as the only pathway to decarbonization disregard the role that renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen must play in New Jersey’s clean-energy future.
Energy policy has come into sharp focus this year and will likely remain top of mind as our state elects a new governor this November. The candidates for governor will be well-served by adopting a balanced approach to energy, and one that preserves the ability for New Jerseyans to continue to rely on natural gas service, instead of electrification mandates.
Chicago Campus That Composts and Creates Energy Aims to Redefine Waste Management
At a once-vacant brownfield on the South Side of Chicago, a semitruck backed into an unassuming warehouse and unloaded a colorful batch of food scraps and spoiled products. The discards soon ended up in a massive tank that mimics a cow's digestion—minus the release of gassy byproducts—where they were turned into compost and renewable energy.
Freedom CNG Acquires X3CNG, Lancer Energy to Expand Western RNG Footprint
Freedom CNG has expanded its renewable fuel infrastructure in the Western U.S. with the acquisitions of Colorado-based X3CNG and Utah-based Lancer Energy, the company announced.
X3CNG operates one of Colorado's largest public-access compressed natural gas (CNG) station networks, including major sites in Colorado Springs and Greeley — the state's largest public CNG station. Lancer Energy specializes in designing, building, and maintaining CNG and renewable natural gas (RNG) fueling stations, and also offers services for electric vehicle and hydrogen fueling systems.
Poland to Facilitate the Construction of Direct Pipelines for Biomethane Generators
In connection with deregulation work, the Poland government has prepared amendments that will broaden the scope of regulations for direct pipelines. The legislative changes will therefore not only benefit wind farm developers, but also biogas producers.
These changes will facilitate the construction of a direct gas pipeline to supply biogas, agricultural biogas and biomethane, the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Poland announced. The ability to supply biomethane directly to the end user will mean that producers will not have to incur the cost or time of connecting to the gas grid. It will also make it possible to supply biomethane without the intermediation of gas operators where the construction of a gas network is difficult or uneconomical.
Opinion: To Accelerate NY’s Climate Progress, Pass a Clean Fuel Policy
This week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a budget deal which allocates $1 billion for climate programs, details TBA. But the Legislature still has urgent work to do to implement New York’s landmark climate law and defend it from Trump administration attacks. To accelerate climate progress, it should pass a clean fuel policy this session.
The state’s climate law mandates a 40 percent greenhouse gas reduction by 2030, and 100 percent zero-emission electricity generation by 2040. We’re not on track to meet those goals. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency denounced the law as unimplementable, even as the U.S. Department of the Interior revoked the permit for a large windpower project off Long Island that would have helped implement it.
