RNG Long-Term Offtake Market Begins to Rebound

The long-term renewable natural gas (RNG) offtake market experienced a recent slowdown but is now progressively picking up, supported by a favorable regulatory framework and increasing activity in the voluntary market. The RNG market faced challenges in late 2024. Uncertainty loomed over renewable energy markets — including RNG — as a new administration prepared to take office. Adding to the volatility, the EPA reduced 2024 compliance commitments for obligated parties under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

California Bioenergy Secures Multiple CDFA Grants in Time for Earth Day Celebration

California Bioenergy LLC (“CalBio”) would like to extend congratulations to the dairy farmers whose digester projects were recently awarded funding through the 2024 Dairy Digester Research and Development Program (DDRDP) and Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP), a meaningful achievement to celebrate during the week of Earth Day. AMMP and DDRDP are part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that invests billions from Cap-and-Trade dollars into reducing greenhouse gas emissions, boosting the economy, and enhancing public health and the environment—especially in disadvantaged communities. These grants, administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), recognize the essential role of the dairy industry in addressing climate change, advancing renewable energy, and improving the quality of life in rural communities. Through hard work and collaboration with dairy partners, CalBio was able to secure three of the five DDRDP grants awarded for their upcoming dairy digester projects in Bakersfield, Gustine, and Modesto.

WM Opens $131 Million Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility in Suburban Philadelphia, PA

WM celebrated the opening of its new RNG facility on the WM Fairless Landfill complex in Bucks County, Pa. The $131 million WM Fairless Renewable Natural Gas Facility is expected to generate approximately 3 million MMBtu per year of RNG, which is equivalent to the energy needed to power almost 63,000 homes annually. WM has been a leader in the beneficial use of landfill gas for decades. The Fairless facility is WM’s second renewable energy project in eastern Pennsylvania where the company also operates three landfill-gas-to-energy projects.

“WM is proud to bring more renewable energy to eastern Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region as part of our continued sustainability growth strategy,” said Chris Farley, area vice president, WM Greater Mid-Atlantic. “Not only has this project helped bolster the local economy by creating jobs, but it also expands WM’s ability to capture and transform landfill gas into a lower-emission energy source that can power communities and even a portion of our own natural gas truck fleet.”

Small States Likely to Lead US in Clean Fuel Standards Rollouts: Event

'Think small' may be the theme to wider adoption of clean fuel standards across the US, according to speakers at an RNG Coalition event in Texas.

California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard program has been mired in legalese since mid-February while the most-recent iteration of a New York Clean Fuel Standard sits in the State Senate's Finance Committee, from which other versions have failed to advance in years past.

However, smaller states appear to be making progress.

Iowa Landfills Capture Methane and Convert It to Usable Natural Gas

When household waste decomposes at a landfill, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that traps significantly more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that large landfills monitor and capture the gas, but some landfills in Iowa are going a step further and “upgrading” the landfill gas into renewable natural gas.
