Why Wall Street Is Investing in Trash: WSJ

WM, North America’s largest landfill operator, has benefitted from tax credits and other incentives from the federal government and an increased demand for recycled materials for packaging. WM launched a multi-billion dollar plan in 2022 to expand its renewable natural gas plants, automated recycling facilities and smart trucks, with investments in technology.

WSJ explains how the company that has probably dealt with your trash hopes to become more efficient and profitable while making strides in sustainability.

Renewable Gas Finds Eager Customers in Trucking

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is finding a growing customer base in US heavy-duty trucking fleets, which are seeing fairly swift cost savings, according to RNG producer and refueling specialist Opal Fuels.

"Capturing harmful methane is the single most important thing we can do to halt climate change, and we've built Opal Fuels to maximize the value of that resource in transport fuel," co-CEO Adam Comora tells Energy Intelligence in an interview. So far, the company has built 350 RNG fueling stations in the US and the choice of locations is deliberate. "Really, all the fueling infrastructure we're building is around dedicated fleets. We are not building stations where we think or hope traffic will show up."

Vision RNG Celebrates Grand Opening, Ribbon Cutting of Landfill RNG Plant in Missouri

Vision RNG and Meridian Waste recently celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the State of Missouri’s first landfill gas to RNG plant at Meridian’s Eagle Ridge Landfill in Bowling Green, Missouri.

This marks the efforts of the VRNG/Meridian Waste partnership over the past 18 months to reach this significant milestone. The plant takes LFG from the landfill, which would be otherwise flared, and converts it to a renewable energy resource. The RNG is delivered to a nearby Panhandle Eastern pipeline and sold to energy company US Energy for distribution to its customers.

Washington State Nears California GHG Market Link Decision

Washington state regulators will provide additional information about a potential linkage with the California-Quebec carbon market this week, as they near a preliminary decision on whether to pursue the plan.

The Washington Department of Ecology (DOE) on Thursday will release its preliminary criteria analysis report for linking the state's cap-and-trade program to the larger California-Quebec joint market. The criteria will continue to evolve as Quebec and California are in the process of reviewing their programs, with the final analysis report expected to be released in 2024, DOE climate pollution reduction program manager Joel Creswell said on Monday at a state Senate Environment, Energy and Technology Committee meeting.

Will CARB Save Funding for Dairy Digesters?

Tulare and Kings counties in California used to be combined. While they are no longer governed by the same jurisdiction, they have plenty in common.

In both counties milk is the top money maker driving the economy. Dairies in both counties have moved to install manure digesters to capture methane emissions in an effort to fight climate change and help clean the air. Facing both the carrot and the stick, dairies must cut emissions by law but have been offered incentives to do so.

Chester County Solid Waste Authority Chooses Waga Energy To Produce RNG at Pennsylvania Landfill

Waga Energy has signed a commercial agreement with the Chester County Solid Waste Authority to produce RNG at its Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center (LLARC) site, located in Narvon, Pennsylvania. The contract was signed on October 4 following a competitive selection process.

As part of this agreement, Waga Energy will fund the construction of an RNG facility using its patented WAGABOX technology, to upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG. Waga Energy will operate the facility for an initial 20-year term, sharing revenues with Chester County Solid Waste Authority, an intergovernmental solid waste management agency which operates the LLARC site.

NC DAQ Issues Air Quality Permit to Sapphire RNG Facility at Sampson County Landfill

After thoroughly reviewing all public comments submitted during the public hearing and notice period, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) is issuing a Title V air quality permit to Sapphire Renewable Natural Gas.

Sapphire Renewable Natural Gas plans to accept and process landfill gas onsite at Sampson County Disposal, in Roseboro, North Carolina. Currently, the landfill burns all its gas using flares, producing air pollution. Air emissions at Sapphire Renewable Natural Gas will be controlled by a waste gas thermal oxidizer, a candlestick flare and a sulfur treatment system with two activated carbon vessels.

bp’s Archaea Energy Achieves Major Milestone, Brings Online First of Its Kind Renewable Natural Gas Plant

Today, bp’s Archaea Energy announced the official startup of its original Archaea Modular Design (AMD) renewable natural gas (RNG) plant in Medora, Indiana. Located next to a landfill owned by Rumpke Waste and Recycling, this is the first plant to come online since bp’s acquisition of Archaea in December 2022.

Landfill gas, a natural byproduct of the decomposition of waste in landfills, is a form of greenhouse gas. Using the AMD design, the Medora plant captures the gas from Rumpke’s landfill and converts it to electricity, heat or renewable natural gas, which leads to cleaner air, less odor and more sustainable energy when compared with traditional fossil fuel energy.
