Clean Energy Fuels Corp., along with its industry partner Union Energy Solutions Limited Partnership, an unregulated affiliate of Enbridge Gas Inc. – an Enbridge Company, announced it has signed an agreement to fuel United Parcel Service (UPS) Canada delivery fleet vehicles with compressed natural gas (CNG) at its London, Ontario station.
UPS Canada has converted 25 package delivery vans to operate on CNG – a lower carbon alternative to gasoline. The Clean Energy-operated CNG fueling station, located near the UPS facility in London, will provide an anticipated 2,000,000 litres (525,000 gasoline gallon equivalent) of CNG in a multi-year agreement. Fueling the trucks with CNG will reduce 700 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions–the equivalent of planting 11,667 trees, removing 152 cars from the road, and recycling 281 tons of landfill waste.
SoCalGas, OPAL Fuels, and Young's Commercial Transfer Showcase Conversion of Fleet to Renewable Natural Gas at World Ag Expo
Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), Young's Commercial Transfer (YCT), one of the largest agricultural trucking companies in the United States, and OPAL Fuels, a leading producer and distributor of renewable natural gas (RNG), are showcasing YCT's commitment to help decarbonize California by transitioning its fleet of heavy-duty trucks to operate on RNG. These ultra, low-emissions trucks are fueled at stations built, owned and operated by OPAL Fuels across the San Joaquin Valley.
The RNG will be delivered via SoCalGas' pipeline network. YCT currently has 80 natural gas trucks and plans to increase that to 110 by the end of March. Additionally, YCT hopes to convert 75 percent of its fleet to RNG by the end of 2023. The trucks will be equipped with Cummins Westport 12-liter engines and automatic transmission and have a driving range of up to 600 miles.
Martini Film Studios Subscribes to Renewable Natural Gas Provided by FortisBC
Martini Film Studios is pleased to announce its entire studio is now operating on Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). The Langley-based studio is the first film studio in British Columbia to sign up for this carbon-neutral energy innovation supported by FortisBC, one of the province’s largest energy providers.
Renewable Natural Gas is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste in landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities.
Advancing Municipal Co-Digestion Projects
Many stakeholders recognize that the amount of greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere needs to be limited, if not reduced, given the negative implications of global warming.
At the municipal level, there’s an opportunity to help reduce emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills to wastewater treatment plants. This is so that the organic waste can be co-digested to produce biogas, which has a number of benefits.

Air Liquide continues its development of biomethane activities with the construction in the USA of its largest biomethane production unit in the world. This will bring the worldwide biomethane production capacity of the Group to 1.8 TWh. The new production unit in the State of Illinois will allow Air Liquide to keep providing low-carbon solutions to its customers in the industrial and transportation sectors and to accompany them in the reduction of their emissions.
TotalEnergies and Veolia Join Forces to Accelerate the Development of Biomethane
TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to produce biomethane from Veolia waste and water treatment facilities operating in more than 15 countries.
The partners will develop and co-invest in a portfolio of international projects, with the ambition to produce up to 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of biomethane per year by 2025. This production of renewable gas made from organic waste will be equivalent to the average annual natural gas consumption of 500,000 residents and will avoid some 200,000 tons of CO2 per year. TotalEnergies will market the resulting biomethane as a renewable fuel for mobility or as a substitute for natural gas in other uses.
Reducing Methane Emissions at Landfills
The second-largest driver of global warming is methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Landfills are a major source of methane, which is created when organic material decomposes underground.
Now a startup that began at MIT is aiming to significantly reduce methane emissions from landfills with a system that requires no extra land, roads, or electric lines to work. The company, Loci Controls, has developed a solar-powered system that optimizes the collection of methane from landfills so more of it can be converted into natural gas.

Hennepin County's Organics Recycling Facility Gets a $43 Million Boost
“Admittedly, when you say anaerobic digester, the average person doesn’t know what that means,” says Ben Knudson, a recycling specialist with Hennepin County who has long advocated for the pricey composting tank that converts banana peels into fuel and fertilizer.
After 15 years with the county, Knudson has sifted through the local trash enough to know that 30% of it is food scraps and other organic material that could’ve been composted. Starting this year, Hennepin hopes to repurpose that waste with a new ordinance requiring larger cities to offer curbside organics recycling services to residents, and smaller cities to designate a drop-off site for food waste.
Turning Ambitious Decarbonization Goals into Reality Requires an Integrated Approach
Cities across the globe have embraced their instrumental role in tackling climate change. For example, in the lead-up to last November's COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, leaders from many of the 1,000-plus cities that have joined the United Nations' Race to Zero initiative announced pledges to slash carbon emissions drastically.
These public commitments are critical for establishing a city's aspirations and, importantly, setting the tangible benchmarks necessary for accountability.
