No Matter the Industry, We All Have a Role to Play in Fighting Hunger
So, why is the founder of a renewable energy company writing about food insecurity?
That’s easier to answer than you might think. Our business model is centered around circularity — from farm to table, and food waste back to the farm — where it’s mixed with agriculture waste (manure) to make renewable natural gas. Food insecurity is also circular — except it is a vicious form of circularity, where those that face food insecurity also face poverty; and that cycle, for many, never ends. If we don’t help our neighbors break that cycle now, we could lose a whole generation of Americans.
RNG Energy Solutions NJ Biogas Project Progresses
RNG Energy Solutions, a New Hampshire, US-based developer of complex energy infrastructure projects, has completed the development phase of the Linden Renewable Energy Project (LRE).
The large organic waste anaerobic digester project in Linden, New Jersey has secured all the required City of Linden, Union County and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection permits necessary to start construction.
Gevo Begins Startup of its Renewable Natural Gas Project in Northwest Iowa on Schedule
Gevo, Inc. announced that it has begun the process of bringing its wholly owned dairy manure-based renewable natural gas (“RNG”) project online. Located in northwest Iowa, the project is known as Gevo NW Iowa RNG, LLC, and it is expected to produce approximately 355,000 MMBtu of RNG per year.
Element Markets Announces Role as RNG Marketer for Anaergia’s Newly Commissioned Wastewater and Food Waste Facility
Element Markets Renewable Energy announced that it was selected to be the RNG offtake partner for Anaergia subsidiary SoCal Biomethane’s wastewater and food waste anaerobic digestion facility in Victor Valley.
The Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority facility was recently retrofit with Anaergia’s high through-put, high-efficiency anaerobic digester technologies, making it the first in California able to accept food waste from the region’s waste haulers in addition to municipal wastewater solids and inject RNG into the regional gas utility pipeline.
Werner Enterprises Adds Natural Gas and Hydrogen Engines to Fleet
Werner Enterprises announced Jan. 28 that it will soon be adding natural gas and hydrogen internal combustion engines to its vehicles as early as the second half of 2022.
The logistics and transportation company will be receiving 15-liter natural gas and 15-liter hydrogen engines from Cummins, which can be paired with the power system company’s Eaton Automated Transmission Technologies Endurant HD Transmission and Fuel Delivery System. When paired with renewable natural gas, Werner Enterprises would potentially be able to achieve carbon negative functioning.
Archaea Announces Commercial Partnership Expansion with FortisBC via New 20-Year RNG Agreement
Archaea Energy Inc. announced expansion of its commercial partnership with FortisBC Energy Inc. by entering into a new long-term RNG purchase and sale agreement. Under the agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, FortisBC expects to purchase up to 8 million gigajoules (approximately 7.6 million MMBtu) of RNG generated by Archaea annually from its portfolio of RNG production facilities for a fixed fee, for 20 years.
The agreement is expected to commence in 2022 upon regulatory approval. The RNG produced by Archaea for this long-term partnership is expected to help
Venture Awarded Source-Separated Organic Waste to RNG Project In New York
Venture Engineering & Construction announced its selection as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor for the design, construction, and commissioning of a $100+ million Source Separated Organic Waste (SSOW) Digester to RNG facility.
Located on Long Island, NY, the site will collect SSOW from residents, grocery stores, and other commercial food entities in the area. In addition, Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) will be collected to serve as liquid feedstock for the digester. The Facility will process the SSOW and FOG waste in an anaerobic digester to produce biogas that contains ~60% methane by volume. The biogas will be upgraded to produce pipeline quality RNG. This facility will be designed to process up to 180,000 ton/yr of SSOW and 30,000 ton/yr FOG into RNG, making it one of the largest such facilities in the U.S.
Dominion Energy Utah to Launch Program for Customers to Affordably Reduce Carbon Footprint
Dominion Energy customers in Utah and Idaho will soon have a new, affordable way to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. The CarbonRight program will allow customers to voluntarily offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home or business by supporting projects, including in Utah, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
To participate, customers may purchase carbon offsets in $5 blocks on their monthly bill. A typical residential customer can offset their entire carbon footprint, achieving "net zero" carbon emissions from their natural gas usage, by purchasing one block a month.
Canada Launches Applications For $200 Million Fund to Support Pollution-Cutting Projects
Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, announced that the second round of applications is open for $200 million through the Low Carbon Economy Fund's Champions stream, which supports a wide range of local pollution‑cutting initiatives in communities across Canada.
Champions stream investments support municipalities, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and Indigenous communities to develop and implement transformational projects that significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, create good jobs, and contribute to Canada's 2030 emissions reduction target.
