AIMPERA Completes Strategic Investment in Novilla RNG
AIMPERA Fund III has completed a majority equity investment in Novilla Investment Holdings, LLC. This investment will be used to scale Novilla RNG's operations and execute on its pipeline of dairy renewable natural gas production facilities across the U.S.
7 Things To Know About Renewable Natural Gas
A new research paper by WRI examines the potential of renewable natural gas as a climate strategy. The paper provides detailed guidance on assessing renewable natural gas potential and climate impacts, evaluating its role in decarbonization and identifying effective policy frameworks for project development.
Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and City of Meriden Announce Food Scrap Co-Collection Pilot Program
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the City of Meriden announced the launch of “Making Meriden Green,” a first-of-its-kind municipal food scrap co-collection pilot program that will demonstrate how waste diversion and reduction solutions can help to address the statewide waste disposal crisis. The pilot, funded through a $40,000 DEEP Save Money and Reduce Trash (SMART) grant, will enroll 1,000 Meriden households in a free four-month program to test an innovative way of separating valuable organic material from other household waste. Food scraps and other organic waste will be collected and transported to Quantum Biopower, where it will be transformed into renewable energy (biogas) through anaerobic digestion, or composted for use as nutrient-rich soil or fertilizer.
Where Others See Waste, Waste Management’s New CSO Sees Opportunity
In January 2018, China banned the import of most plastics and paper that other countries, primarily the U.S. and Europe, had been sending its way. The move sent the global recycling market into a tailspin.
It looked pretty bad, but America’s recycling system didn’t die the untimely death some predicted. In fact, according to Tara Hemmer, chief sustainability officer for Waste Management, business is booming. Waste Management is North America’s largest recycling company.
GreenBiz sat down with Hemmer to talk about her new role, Waste Management’s investments in next-generation recycling technology, the progress the industry has made over the last few years, and the demand driving the industry forward.
FortisBC Awards Biogas Upgrading Contract to Greenlane
FortisBC Energy has awarded a biogas upgrading contract to Greenlane Biogas North America for a new project at the Vancouver Landfill in British Columbia.
Under the $12.1 million (€8.4 million) contract, Greenlane will supply its two-stage pressure swing adsorption system to upgrade landfill gas to clean, low-carbon RNG for direct injection into FortisBC’s regional natural gas pipeline system.
U-M Researchers Lead $6.8 Million Study to Turn Food and Farm Waste Into Fuel
University of Michigan scientists are leading a $6.8 million research project to expand what organic materials – like food and agricultural waste – can be bio-digested into methane.
Anaerobic digestors have been used for decades to make energy, and this five-year research project will determine how cost-effective an enhanced method can be and whether the process results in a reduced carbon footprint.
Getting Renewable Energy From Landfills with Archaea Energy
Keystone Landfill sits on more than 700 acres. It stretches into two boroughs: Dunmore and Throop. For many years residents have questioned the landfill’s operation. Air quality is a top concern.
For nearly two years, Archaea Energy has been building a $130 million renewable natural gas processing facility on site, under a gas right agreement with Keystone. Archaea Energy will be doing the same thing at Waste Management Alliance Landfill.
Once it is all processed, Archaea teamed up with UGI with a pipeline interconnection allowing area customers to benefit while reducing emissions into the air by 90 percent according to the company.
Greenlane Renewables Signs Over $7 Million in New System Supply Contracts
Greenlane Renewables Inc. announced it has signed two new biogas upgrading system supply contracts valued in total at $7.1 million (Canadian dollars) for separate renewable natural gas projects. Order fulfillment by Greenlane for both projects will commence immediately.
The first awarded contract is for the supply of a biogas upgrading system for a dairy farm RNG project in the State of Nebraska. The second contract is for a landfill gas-to-RNG project in Brazil with one of the country's largest landfill operators, Orizon Valorizacao de Residuos. Greenlane will supply its water wash system to upgrade the landfill gas to low carbon RNG.
UGI Adds Renewable Natural Gas to its Supply Portfolio
In Fiscal 2021, UGI Utilities, Inc. signed an interconnect agreement with Archaea Energy to accept delivery of RNG produced from the Keystone Landfill in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, into its natural gas pipeline that serves its distribution system. Once fully operational, the recently completed interconnect is capable of accommodating up to 5.3 billion cubic feet of RNG supply each year, making this the largest current RNG supply point in the United States to date.
Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Retooled for RNG
Verbio North America says it will more than double the capacity of its plant in central Iowa to produce renewable natural gas from corn stover, and it plans to begin production of corn ethanol in the final months of the year. The facility was the first of three plants in the nation to return to biofuel production after faltering as a producer of cellulosic ethanol, made from grasses, woody plants, and crop residue.
