Vashon Island Anaerobic Digester Unveiled

Impact Bioenergy, a manufacturer of systems that convert organic food waste into usable energy and fertilizer, unveiled its new anaerobic digester at the Island Spring Organics tofu factory Tuesday.

The project, supported by Gov. Jay Inslee’s Clean Energy Fund, the Sustainable Energy Trust and King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, is able to derive methane and carbon dioxide from food waste that is broken down by bacteria — the process creates biogas, which can be treated and used to generate energy.

Brightmark Energy Funds Indiana Plastics-to-Fuel Plan

The financing for Brightmark Energy Ashley Indiana includes $185 million in Indiana green bonds, which were underwritten by Goldman Sachs & Co. As part of the financing closure, Brightmark has become the controlling owner of RES Polyflow, the Ohio-based energy technology company that innovated the process for converting plastics directly into transportation fuel and other products.

The Ashley facility will be the first of its kind to take mixed-waste, single-use plastics and convert them into usable products at commercial scale. The facility will initially convert approximately 100,000 tons of plastics into more than 18 million gallons a year of ultra-low sulfur diesel and naphtha blend stocks and nearly 6 million gallons a year of commercial-grade wax in a process that is expected to be 93 percent efficient.\

Dallas Fort Worth Airport's Energy Initiatives Result in $1 Million in Savings

In a recently released environmental sustainability report, Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) airport announced its current achievements and future goals relating to energy usage.

Among some of the findings:

By installing highly efficient plumbing fixtures across terminals and office buildings, DFW lowered customer water usage across all five terminals, saving millions of gallons each month. DFW partners with neighboring cities to create a reclaimed water-delivery system that provides water irrigation and serves as a key component in heating terminal buildings.

City of Toronto Advances RNG Projects

The City of Toronto, Ontario has begun installing the first of what could be four facilities to produce large quantities of renewable natural gas (RNG) from the collection and processing of residential source separated organics (SSO) and solid waste. The initial project will upgrade the more than 5 million cubic meters of biogas produced annually through anaerobic digestion of residential SSO at the recently expanded Dufferin Organics Processing Facility. Installation began in February 2019 and the first gas molecules are expected to flow by the end of this year or early in 2020.

Under consideration are three additional facilities. One would be installed to upgrade biogas from Toronto’s second and larger anaerobic digestion facility at a site known as Disco Road. The other two would upgrade landfill gas at solid waste sites — the active Green Lane Landfill, about two hours southwest of Toronto, and the Keele Valley Landfill, just north of the city, which was closed 20 years ago.

RNG Coalition & NGVAmerica Announce Infographic Report: Driving Down Emissions with Renewable Natural Gas

Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica) and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) today announced that 32 percent of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles in calendar year 2018 was renewable natural gas (RNG).

Captured above ground from organic material in agricultural, wastewater, landfill or food waste, RNG – or biomethane – produces net carbon-neutral and even net carbon-negative results when fueling on-road vehicles like short- and long-haul trucks, transit buses, and refuse and recycling collection vehicles.  RNG fuel in 2018 had an EER-adjusted carbon intensity as low as -303.30 according to the California Air Resources Board.  By comparison, California’s electricity grid rated between 25.0 and 38.95.
