Comment: Washington State Can Enjoy California’s Clean-fuels Success
The Pacific Coast has seen significant success in combating air pollution since the dawn of this century. Our state and regional neighbors — Oregon, California and British Columbia — have each established policies to combat emissions and pollution from the transportation sector.
This month the Washington state Senate may determine the fate of Washington’s current initiative, House Bill 1110, to finally join its Pacific brethren in taking a stand against the negative health and climate impacts associated with emissions of carbon, particulate matter and greenhouse gases from fossil fuel use.

Life Metamorphosis Project to Collect Barcelona Citizen's Waste to Produce RNG
We all know that there are vehicles powered with petrol, electricity and gas. Now there is a new way to drive engines, and it begins in our household rubbish bin. This is the aim of the Life Methamorphosis project: to achieve biomethane from organic waste, turning it into renewable gas in the following five steps:
1. Recycling.
Each inhabitant of the city of Barcelona generates about 1.5 kilos of waste daily. 2.5 million kilos of rubbish every day of which only 40% is recycled. “With all the organic waste that is generated we can produce enough biomethane to power 10,000 cars to travel around 15,000 kilometres every year”, points out Andrew Shepherd, the SEAT engineer who heads the Methamorphosis project. Of all the rubbish collected at the Ecoparc 2 in Barcelona, biomethane is produced using the organic waste from the brown containers and whatever is useful from the grey containers. All of this raw material will be turned into biofuel.

Brightmark Energy Launches Central Washington’s First Dairy-to-RNG Project
Brightmark Energy, a San Francisco-based waste and energy development company, recently launched a biogas project in Yakima County, Washington, that will convert 150,000 gallons per day of dairy waste from up to 7,000 cows into 160,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) – the equivalent of 1.4 million gallons of gasoline – and other products each year. Collaborating as Augean Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), Brightmark Energy, Promus Energy, and DeRuyter Dairies developed the project. Brightmark Energy will manage the joint venture and Promus Energy, the original developer, will serve as the project manager.

Northern Oregon Dairy Farms to Produce Renewable Natural Gas
As milk prices plummet, Oregon’s largest dairy hopes to cash in on another kind of commodity produced by its cows: Manure.
Boardman’s Threemile Canyon Farms is partnering with a Portland investment fund in a $55 million project to convert methane from the waste produced by its 70,000 cows into natural gas, which will be sold to power buses and garbage trucks in Southern California. Because it’s designated renewable energy, the manure-produced biogas sells for 10 times more than fossil fuel natural gas, Threemile general manager Marty Myers told a state Department of Treasury panel last summer, as the company sought tax-exempt state bonds to help pay for the project.

Frontiers in Energy Research Release a Special Issue Addressing Challenges to Efficient Bioenergy Production
Storing chopped, wet corn stover in conditions with reduced oxygen not only reduces microbial loss and risk of fire but also can increase yields during conversion to biofuels.
This finding is one among many in a compendium of new research that explores how grinding, sifting, drying, pelletizing and chemically treating plant material and other forms of biomass before it reaches the biorefinery could help solve big challenges plaguing today’s bioenergy industry.

Ohio EPA Poised to Issue Decision on Proposed Rumpke Landfill Expansion
After years of discussion, Rumpke Waste and Recycling is poised to receive a decision from the Ohio EPA regarding the proposed 240-acre expansion of Rumpke Sanitary Landfill in Hamilton County, as reported by WKRC.
The landfill, which is located north of Cincinnati, has less than four years of constructed capacity remaining, according to Corporate Communications Manager Molly Yeager. The expansion would provide the landfill with an additional 20 to 25 years of capacity — and, unless it receives approval, customers can expect a roughly 20% hike in service costs.
