The U.S. dairy industry is a major contributor to agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, with manure storage and handling representing a significant source of methane. Anaerobic digestion — a biological process in which microorganisms break down biodegradable organic matter — of cow manure has been widely studied as a strategy to mitigate manure-related emissions while producing renewable energy. That energy comes in the form of biogas that can be used to generate electricity or make renewable natural gas. But adoption of the strategy has been constrained by costs. Now, a team led by researchers at Penn State may have found a way to make the process profitable.
BerQ RNG Acquires Rialto Bioenergy Facility from Sevana Bioenergy
BerQ RNG, a Burlington, Ontario-based developer, owner and operator of renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities, has completed the acquisition of a portfolio of assets from Sevana Bioenergy, a Boise, Idaho-based developer and operator of RNG facilities.
The transaction includes the Rialto Bioenergy Facility, an organic waste anaerobic digestion to RNG facility located in Rialto, California, and a pipeline of dairy and swine manure RNG development projects in Idaho, California and Kansas. BerQ says the deal diversifies its current portfolio and underscores its experience as a multi-feedstock RNG platform.
CIP Enters Italian RNG Market with 20-Project Platform
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has taken a final investment decision (FID) on Via Verde, an Italian biomethane platform comprising a development pipeline of 20 projects and marking its entry into the country’s biomethane market.
CIP is investing through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund II (ABF II), which started fundraising in summer 2025 and focuses on the development, construction and operation of biogas plants across Europe. Via Verde is the fund’s first investment.
Infinium Expands Into Biogas-Based SAF
Infinium has introduced mSAF, a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) platform built on methane-based feedstocks. The offering converts renewable natural gas, biogas, flare gas and other qualified methane streams into low-carbon aviation fuel.
The launch expands the range of feedstocks and locations available for Infinium’s projects. It also complements the company’s existing carbon dioxide-based eSAF business. Infinium says no single feedstock pathway can meet rising demand for sustainable aviation fuel on its own, so diversifying sources is key. Biogas, renewable natural gas and flare gas are already collected at landfills, dairies and wastewater facilities across multiple regions, offering new end uses for these streams.
New RNG Injection Model Could Expand Market Access for Remote Producers
Gas Networks Ireland has opened its €32 million Central Grid Injection (CGI) facility in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, giving biomethane producers located too far from the pipeline network a route to supply renewable gas to the national grid.
The company says it is the first facility of its kind in Ireland and Europe, and it was officially opened by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on 2 October.
Anaerobic Digester Helps Toyota Reach Carbon-Neutral Production at UK Plant
Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK's engine plant in Deeside, North Wales, has begun carbon-neutral production, becoming the first Toyota facility outside Japan to transition to carbon-neutral manufacturing operations.
A newly commissioned anaerobic digester supplying biomethane gas and renewable electricity to the site played a decisive role in closing the plant's remaining emissions gap.
The RNG Gap Ethanol Can’t Afford to Ignore
Renewable natural gas (RNG) developers have a supply problem, and ethanol producers have a demand they aren't allowed to use to solve it. Dispensing capacity hasn't kept pace with RNG production, and the market is increasingly oversupplied. Ethanol plants, meanwhile, are significant consumers of natural gas for process heat. On paper, that looks like an obvious match. In practice, the accounting rules governing how RNG's environmental value can be claimed stand in the way, and nobody in the industry has managed to close the gap.
Waga Energy to Build RNG Unit at Spanish Landfill
French gas upgrading specialist Waga Energy SA (EPA:WAGA) has signed a ten-year contract with Spanish waste management services company FCC Medioambiente to set up and operate a renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at a landfill site near Granada, southern Spain.
Waga Energy said on Tuesday that, under the contract, it will finance, build, own and operate a WAGABOX upgrading unit at the Ecocentral landfill in Alhendin. The unit will process up to 2,400 cubic metres per hour of landfill gas and is scheduled to start operations in 2028.
California Bioenergy Completes Acquisition of South Dakota RNG
California Bioenergy LLC (CalBio) has completed the acquisition of Sevana Bioenergy’s interest in South Dakota Biogas LLC, strengthening its participation in a joint venture developing dairy renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in South Dakota.
South Dakota Biogas LLC and UGI Energy Services (UGIES) hold ownership interests in MBL Bioenergy, a joint venture formed to develop and operate eight dairy RNG projects in the state, with scope for additional projects.
Renewable Energy Plant will Convert Landfill Emissions, Support Fort Worth’s Trash Demands
Fort Worth officials expect to have a renewable natural gas plant built at the city’s landfill within the next two years, capturing gases and producing more funds to support long-term waste planning.
Environmental services officials finalized an agreement in 2025 with Archaea Energy Operating LLC — a subsidiary of natural gas producer Archaea Energy Inc. — to convert the landfill’s emissions into renewable natural gas through a conversion system, according to city documents.
