Five dairies run by the Fernandes family in Tulare County have installed covered lagoon digesters and manure separation upgrades, funded in part by more than $5.3 million in California Department of Food and Agriculture grants. All five operations feed into the Calgren Dairy Fuels pipeline cluster, California’s first full-scale dairy biogas network, converting captured methane into renewable natural gas for injection into the SoCalGas system or use as heavy-duty truck fuel.
Over the next decade, the family’s digesters are projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 550,000 metric tons of CO2 while supporting roughly 140 local jobs in the Central Valley.
Fond du Lac Wastewater Facility Advances RNG Pipeline Injection Project
The City of Fond du Lac’s Regional Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery Facility capped a strong year with a perfect compliance score from the Wisconsin DNR and a statewide operations award, while continuing construction on a new biosolids dryer and RNG pipeline injection project. Once complete later this year, the facility will convert all of its biogas into renewable natural gas while producing Class A fertilizer for local agriculture.
The upgrade is expected to create a new revenue stream for the city and reduce emissions, adding to a strong 2025 in which the plant treated 2.6 billion gallons of wastewater and beneficially reused 73% of its biosolids as fertilizer.
Axpo Injects First Biomethane Into Italy’s National Grid
Swiss renewable energy company Axpo has injected the first gas from its biomethane plant in Grottole, southern Italy, into the national grid. The facility is expected to reach full capacity within six months, ultimately producing enough renewable gas to supply about 3,200 Italian homes annually.
The milestone comes as Europe’s biomethane sector accelerates, with the European Biogas Association reporting production capacity topped 8 bcm this year, a 17% jump over 2025 fueled by billions in new investment.
USDA Finalizes Regenerative Feedstock Rule, Setting Stage for 45Z Implementation
USDA has finalized its Regenerative Feedstock Rule, establishing the agency’s methodology for quantifying and verifying the carbon intensity of eligible biofuel feedstocks. Industry groups including Clean Fuels and Growth Energy welcomed the move, though Treasury and DOE still need to fold the framework into final 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit regulations.
The rule was published in the Federal Register on June 29 and takes effect July 29, with producers and farm groups now watching for Treasury’s next steps on final 45Z guidance.
Aemetis Sells $18 Million in Section 45Z Clean Fuel Tax Credits
Aemetis announced that its ethanol and renewable natural gas subsidiaries received funds from the sale of $18 million in Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credits, covering 2025 ethanol output and year-to-date 2026 ethanol and RNG production. Net cash proceeds came to roughly $14.5 million after transaction costs.
Company leadership called it the firm’s second and third 45Z transaction in six months and pointed to planned RNG volume growth and efficiency gains at its Keyes facility as reasons the credit’s value could keep climbing through the year.
RNG Coalition Marks 15 Years As North American Facility Count Passes 600
RNG Coalition, the nonprofit trade group representing the North American renewable natural gas (RNG) industry, is marking 15 years of operation alongside a milestone in the sector it represents: more than 600 operational RNG facilities now running across the continent.
The North American RNG portfolio has reached 604 operational facilities, following a rapid run of growth that saw the industry pass 300 facilities in 2023, 400 in 2024, and 500 in 2025.
Yolo County Landfill Project Turns Methane Into Renewable Natural Gas
Yolo County, California is moving forward with a project to replace the aging gas-to-electricity system at the Yolo County Central Landfill with a facility that converts landfill gas into renewable natural gas (RNG). The Board of Supervisors approved a 20-year agreement with Yolo RNG, LLC, effective July 1, and once complete in summer 2028 the facility will process all collected landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG for injection into PG&E’s system.
Randolph County Selects Waga Energy to Convert Landfill Gas into RNG in North Carolina
Randolph County, North Carolina has selected Waga Energy to finance, build, own and operate a renewable natural gas (RNG) production unit at the Great Oak Landfill in Randleman under a 20-year agreement. Using the company’s patented WAGABOX technology, the facility will upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG, producing roughly 610,000 MMBtu per year and avoiding an estimated 47,500 tons of CO2-equivalent emissions annually.
RNG-Powered Fleets Remain Carbon-Negative in California
Commercial fleets fueled by renewable natural gas (RNG) in California achieved carbon-negative transportation outcomes for the sixth consecutive year in 2025, according to a report from The Transport Project, RNG Coalition and the California Renewable Transportation Alliance.
Rebuilding effort Presents Call To Climate-Proof Our Energy System
Washington secured a federal major disaster declaration in April after a months-long push by Gov. Ferguson and the state's congressional delegation, unlocking federal aid to address an estimated $182.3 million in damage to public infrastructure from the December 2025 flooding. Federal Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation funds will now prove vital to rebuilding the roads, levees, water systems and public buildings lashed by Mother Nature when three of the state's largest rivers — the Skagit, Snohomish and Cedar — reached their highest levels in recorded history.
But rebuilding should mean more than simply restoring what was — Washington can find a silver lining in disaster by rebuilding in a way that climate-proofs the systems on which our communities rely.
