Axpo Injects First Biomethane Into Italy’s National Grid

Swiss renewable energy company Axpo has injected the first gas from its biomethane plant in Grottole, southern Italy, into the national grid. The facility is expected to reach full capacity within six months, ultimately producing enough renewable gas to supply about 3,200 Italian homes annually.

The milestone comes as Europe’s biomethane sector accelerates, with the European Biogas Association reporting production capacity topped 8 bcm this year, a 17% jump over 2025 fueled by billions in new investment.
