EU Methane Regulation Makes Gas Imports to Europe More Difficult

Is Europe decoupling itself from global trade with the EU methane regulation? This question was discussed by moderator Heiko Lohmann at the 'Handelsblatt Annual Gas Conference' together with Gunnar Steck from the industry association Eurogas and Gregor Pett from the German importer Uniper. The EU regulation has been in force since August. It is therefore directly applicable law and is causing a lot of uncertainty in Germany.

Green Plains Enters into Agreement with Freepoint Commodities to Monetize 45Z Tax Credits

Vinson & Elkins represented Green Plains Renewable Energy (“GPRE”) in the sale of 2025 45Z credits generated from several of their ethanol facilities and the negotiation of a term sheet for an additional tranche of 2025 45Z Credits.

GPRE expects the sale and transactions contemplated in the term sheet to generate $40 million to $50 million in 2025 EBITDA.

Waga Energy Reports 39% Growth in RNG Revenue for H1 2025

Waga Energy, a leader in Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production, announced a YoY revenue increase of 39% for the first half of 2025, reaching € 27.4 million. This growth was driven by increased RNG production despite a projected decline in EPC revenues. The company aims to achieve EBITDA breakeven by the end of 2025, having improved its EBITDA by € 2.3 million to -€ 0.2 million during this period.

Operationally, Waga Energy injected 326 GWh of RNG, avoiding 80,500 tons of CO₂ emissions and maintaining a 95% uptime across their portfolio. The company is focusing on converting a pipeline of projects into signed contracts, particularly in the US, with € 59 million in Capex investments, more than double compared to H1 2024.

California’s Landfill Methane Rule Proposal Tightens Gas Rules

California released a draft of its updated Landfill Methane Rule on Tuesday. The proposal tightens numerous requirements related to landfill gas collection and control systems, including response times for leaks.

The California Air Resources Board, the agency in charge of the rule, said the changes are in line with state targets intended to drive down methane emissions 40% below 2013 levels by 2030.

EnviTec Breaks Ground on Flagship Biogas Project in Sweden

EnviTec Biogas has commenced construction on its flagship project in Sweden. The milestone was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony in Vara, Västra Götaland. The flagship biogas plant is being developed by Biogas Västra Skaraborg (BVS) in partnership with EnviTec Plant Construction and is set to become a major hub for biomethane and bio-LNG production in Scandinavia. Sweden also started operations in Gasum’s Götene biogas plant earlier this year.

Vanguard Renewables Agrees RNG Offtake Agreement with CenterPoint Energy

In Minnesota, Vanguard Renewables announced its first utility offtake through a new agreement with CenterPoint Energy. The agreement marks a key milestone as Vanguard Renewables scales renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure to help states like Minnesota meet their clean energy goals. 

CenterPoint Energy will purchase RNG produced at a new anaerobic digestion facility in Meeker County, co-located on a historic dairy and crop farm and integrated into CenterPoint’s existing natural gas infrastructure. The system serves 930,000 customers across Minnesota.

Clean Energy to Build Second Hydrogen Station for Foothill Transit’s Expanding Fleet of Low-Emissions Buses

Clean Energy Fuels Corp., the largest provider of the cleanest fuel for the transportation market, announced it has been awarded the contract to design, build and maintain a second hydrogen fueling station for Foothill Transit, continuing an over 20-year partnership to support the agency’s growing fleet of low-emissions buses.

The new station will be located at Foothill Transit’s Arcadia bus yard which also serves as a fueling depot for its renewable natural gas (RNG) bus fleet. An initial order of 19 new hydrogen fuel cell buses will be delivered to operate out of the site. This $11.3 million design-build project will be partially funded using federal and state grant assistance.
