UK Shifts From Fossil Gas to Green Domestic Methane – Three Maids Plant Marks New Energy Era

Acorn Bioenergy, a company of the Qualitas Energy Group, has officially commissioned its first biomethane plant in Three Maids Hill, Winchester. The facility produces over 120 GWh of biomethane annually, covering the heating needs of more than 9,000 households – providing a direct alternative to fossil natural gas.

The UK government is promoting biomethane as a replacement for fossil gas, supporting its expansion through schemes such as the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) and the Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs). Qualitas Energy is investing in this market and has now launched its first biomethane plant in the UK.

UC Riverside Study Forecasts Most Heavy-Duty Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Emissions Reductions Will Come from Improved Internal Combustion Engines, Regardless of EV Adoption

A May 2025 study published by a team of researchers from University of California, Riverside (UCR) shows outsized emissions reduction effects of replacing older heavy-duty diesel engines with new diesel or natural gas models, regardless of EV adoption. The study, “The impacts of improving heavy-duty internal combustion engine technology on reducing NOx emissions inventories going into the future,” is California-specific in terms of projected fleet composition and toxic nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions through 2050, but the implications are valid nationwide.
