Which Industry Knowns Are Driving RNG Tailwinds and Future Outlook

Renewable natural gas (RNG) projects are coming online at a fast clip, with a rise in waste management operators and developers powering the tailwinds. This industry trend continues, despite regulatory and market uncertainties.

Despite the flurry of activity, what’s produced today and what’s in the pipeline is just a sliver of a fraction of the potential for RNG, say industry groups like the American Biogas Council and The RNG Coalition.

Australia Agrees First Biomethane Feed into Natural Gas Network

It’s been a big month in Australia’s biomethane sector with the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) signing an agreement to connect the first biomethane project into its South Australian gas networks.

Under the agreement with local bioenergy business Delorean Corporation, up to 210 terajoules of biomethane generated from commercial and industrial organic waste will be injected into the existing gas network each year. Delorean also plans to sell the biomethane to industrial users.

Montauk Renewables Outlines 2025 RNG Revenue Targets amid EPA Regulatory Impacts

CEO Sean McClain highlighted that the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) delay of the 2024 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) compliance deadline has affected the renewable natural gas (RNG) industry. However, Montauk has zero exposure to the 2024 compliance waiver due to prior sales of all 2024 D3 RINs.

The company has committed to transferring most of its RINs inventory from 2025 RNG production at prices approximating the D3 RIN Index.

Clean Energy Fuels Expects Better RNG Demand After Tariff and 45Z Clarity

Clean Energy Fuels expects demand for renewable natural gas from trucking companies in the US to pick up once there is more clarity on the Trump administration's tariffs as well as its market policies, CEO Andrew Littlefair said on the company's Q1 earnings call.

The RNG producer has seen Q1 sales dip and pointed to colder weather at the start of the year, which resulted in reduced supply while the market still awaits clarity on Trump's tariff war and further guidance on the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, with no updates published since January.

Biogas Tax Credit Market Stays Strong in 2025

Upon becoming law in 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”) extended the opportunity to generate investment tax credits (“ITCs”) to renewable natural gas (“RNG”) projects, incentivizing the development of new projects and enabling some projects already in the development pipeline to capture material new value. Specifically, the IRA provided for the generation of ITCs pursuant to Section 48 of the amended Internal Revenue Code of 1986 based on a percentage of eligible project costs.

Initial excitement cooled after the Treasury Department released guidance in November 2023 suggesting that the Section 48 ITC would exclude certain portions of biogas upgrading equipment from being ITC-eligible, making ITC modeling difficult for RNG developers. The Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas and the American Biogas Council led developers and other RNG industry stakeholders in seeking clarification of that guidance, resulting in finalized language specifying that equipment used to convert raw biogas into pipeline-quality RNG, including gas upgrading equipment, is ITC-eligible.

Op-Ed: RNG and Hydrogen Are Vital to New Jersey’s Clean-Energy Future

Policies that seek to mandate electrification as the only pathway to decarbonization disregard the role that renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen must play in New Jersey’s clean-energy future.

Energy policy has come into sharp focus this year and will likely remain top of mind as our state elects a new governor this November. The candidates for governor will be well-served by adopting a balanced approach to energy, and one that preserves the ability for New Jerseyans to continue to rely on natural gas service, instead of electrification mandates.
