Green Rock Energy Partners Acquires Pennsylvania Renewable Natural Gas Production Facility
The South Hills deal adds to Green Rock’s growing portfolio in the renewable energy space and is consistent with the firm’s primary investment focus on energy-producing waste-to-value assets.
Located in South Park Township, Pennsylvania, South Hills upgrades landfill biogas to produce RNG that will be sold in the vehicular transportation market as renewable compressed natural gas. Production at the facility is expected to exceed one million gallons of renewable fuel per year. Green Rock has partnered with United Green Energy, and others, to manage the renewable natural gas offtake.
Vision RNG and Waste Connections Sign Agreement for LFG to RNG Project at the Laurel Ridge Landfill
Vision RNG, LLC today announced a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) agreement with the Laurel Ridge Landfill in Corbin, Kentucky. Owned by Laurel Ridge Landfill, LLC, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, Inc, the project will use 1,800 cfm of landfill gas (LFG) and construction is scheduled to be completed in Q4 of 2024. The project will produce 450,000 MMBtu of RNG annually that will be injected into a nearby natural gas transmission pipeline. This RNG will be used by various customers across the U.S. for transportation fuel and other sustainability purposes.
Vision RNG’s CEO, Bill Johnson commented, “We are delighted to be partnered with Waste Connections on this project. As our portfolio of RNG projects continues to expand, we are making a real impact on reducing methane emissions, capturing that wasted greenhouse gas and putting it to good use as renewable natural gas.”
Canada Invests €10.6m in Biomass-Fueled RNG Facility
The governments of Ontario and Canada are investing more than $11.3 million (€10.6m) to expand CHAR Technologies’ facility in Thorold to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) and biocarbon – creating the largest facility of its kind in Canada. It will be the only RNG facility in the country to exclusively use woody biomass. Expanding CHAR’s Thorold facility will create close to 40 new direct and indirect jobs, as well as 20 construction jobs.
“This new facility will produce clean alternative fuels and increase sustainability in the forest sector through new and emerging uses of renewable forest biomass,” said Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “Our investment in CHAR Technologies is an investment in Ontario, which will boost productivity, create jobs and support a thriving forest economy that communities throughout the province depend on.”
New use Considered for Methane from Watford-Area Landfill
Mayor Todd Case attended a recent public meeting organized by an Enbridge-hired consultant to prepare an environmental study for a pipeline that could be built to carry renewable natural gas from Twin Creeks, the large Waste Management-operated landfill in the township near Watford.
“Any time you can use that methane gas, which is byproduct of that very large landfill, that’s a good thing. That’s a positive thing instead of flaring it off into the atmosphere,” Case said.

Austin Airport Earns Carbon Neutrality Accreditation, Key to City's Environmental Goals
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has earned accreditation as carbon neutral for the second straight year and is the only carbon neutral airport in the United States, according to airport officials.
“We are very excited about it,” said BJ Carpenter, sustainability coordinator for the airport's environmental division. “It is not an easy task to be able to achieve. For a smaller, medium-sized airport to be able to achieve this level of carbon neutrality is exciting. We think it’s a positive driver for carbon management at the airport, and we’re very proud of it.”
