Successful Farming: Turn Waste into Wealth
Everyone has heard one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But can one cow’s waste be a farmer’s treasure?
Renewable natural gas (RNG) producers say yes.
Clean Energy Renewable Natural Gas to Fuel Trucks for Pennsylvania Refuse Authority, WM and Others
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced it is has begun providing renewable natural gas (RNG) for the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority (CCRRA) in Bellefonte, PA, supporting a transition to a cleaner, low-carbon fuel produced from organic waste.
“The recycling and refuse industry has long embraced natural gas to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Chad Lindholm, senior vice president, Clean Energy. “Our CCRRA station is one of the first on the East Coast to transition to RNG and will further our sustainability goal of providing RNG at all of our stations by 2025.”
Communities on the Move: Renewable Natural Gas Powering Ontario’s Communities
For many municipalities looking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) while also curtailing the waste they generate, renewable natural gas (RNG) is becoming a promising solution.
RNG is the gas that’s naturally created from the breakdown of organic waste, which typically comes from four sources: food processing, agriculture, biosolids from wastewater treatment plants, and municipal organics.
Sunnyside OKs Agreement to Build RNG Plant
Sunnyside’s city council has approved an agreement with the Port of Sunnyside and Pacific Ag to construct infrastructure for a new renewable natural gas plant near Sunnyside.
The plant will produce renewable natural gas, or biomethane. Pacific Ag, based in Oregon, uses crop residue and dairy manure from growers to produce biomethane, and will build the facility, according to information from the company and the city.
CenterPoint Energy’s Green Hydrogen Facility is First Ever to Register and Issue Certificates on M-RETS Renewable Thermal Tracking Platform
CenterPoint Energy, Minnesota’s largest natural gas utility, has registered its Minneapolis green hydrogen facility on the M-RETS® Renewable Thermal Tracking System to track renewable thermal certificates (RTCs). CenterPoint Energy’s facility, which began operations earlier this year, is the first-ever green hydrogen facility to register with a tracking system in North America and the company is receiving the nation’s first RTCs issued for green hydrogen.
RTCs are a tool that represents the environmental attributes associated with renewable natural gas and other renewable thermal commodities, including green hydrogen. CenterPoint Energy plans to retire the RTCs generated from its green hydrogen facility on behalf of its customers.
Greenlane Renewables Announces Dairy RNG System Sales Contract
Greenlane Renewables has been awarded a $4.6 million (US$3.5 million) contract for a dairy RNG project in the Western United States for the supply of a biogas upgrading system. Greenlane will supply its pressure swing adsorption system for upgrading biogas generated from anaerobic digestion of dairy cow manure into carbon negative renewable natural gas ("RNG") suitable for injection into the local pipeline network. Order fulfillment is expected to commence immediately.
"This new project win for Greenlane continues to highlight just how important dairy-derived RNG is, particularly for commercial transportation fuel providers", said Brad Douville, Chief Executive Officer. "Dairy RNG is by far the lowest carbon intensity fuel available today and remains a core and growing option for major fuel providers to decarbonize now."
Shell to Acquire Renewable Natural Gas Producer Nature Energy
Shell Petroleum NV, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell plc (Shell), has reached an agreement with Davidson Kempner Capital Management LP, Pioneer Point Partners and Sampension to acquire 100% shareholding of Nature Energy Biogas A/S (Nature Energy) for nearly USD $2 billion (€ 1.9 billion). The acquisition will be absorbed within Shell’s current capital range, which remains unchanged.
Based in Denmark, Nature Energy is a producer of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from agricultural, industrial, and household wastes.
By purchasing the shares in Nature Energy, Shell will acquire the largest RNG producer in Europe, its portfolio of cash generative operating plants, associated feedstock supply and infrastructure, its pipeline of growth projects and its in-house expertise in the design, construction, and operation of innovative and differentiated RNG plant technology.
Edmonton's Clover Bar Landfill Still Not Capped and Releasing Gas After 13 Years, New Capture Technology Planned
Edmonton’s Clover Bar landfill is still uncovered and releasing fumes more than a decade after closing to the public, and new capture technology is in the works to convert its methane into renewable biogas for sale.
City council’s utility committee met privately Friday to get an update on the landfill-gas-to-renewable-gas conversion project at the Clover Bar landfill. The project was approved in February 2021, also in private, and is expected to be complete by mid-2024.
‘Wave of the Future’? New Method Better Breaks Down Sewage into Methane for Electricity
Creating their own cheap, renewable energy could soon be a reality for cities thanks to new research from Washington State University Tri-Cities.
Researchers at the Richland campus are working to streamline and scale up a bioengineering process to produce renewable natural gas out of treated human feces. The process will help cities, counties and smaller governments reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they produce by powering wastewater treatment facilities and city-owned electric vehicles with the natural gas – in this case, methane – that’s produced.
BayoTech – Driving Down the Cost of Clean Hydrogen Production with Gabriel Olson
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), signed into law by President Biden on August 16, 2022, authorized $391 billion in spending on energy and climate change as part of a $738 billion overall package. The Environmental Protection Agency called the IRA “…the most aggressive action in tackling the climate crisis in U.S. history.”
A vital element of the IRA is a package of hydrogen production tax credits (PTCs) designed to stimulate clean hydrogen production and consumption and spur innovation in the sector.
