Opinion: The Case for Renewable Gas in a Clean Energy Future, Not Just Electricity
The provincial government’s CleanBC Roadmap sets ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets including a cap on natural gas utilities. Reducing emissions has always been top of mind for us at FortisBC, both through an ever-increasing focus on energy efficiency and since 2011, introducing North America’s first Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) program.
Renewable and low carbon gases are an important cornerstone of a low carbon economy and help abate emissions across the whole value chain. Their use is essential if we are to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in multiple sectors, including buildings, industry, and transportation.
Lawrence, Kansas, Black Hills Energy Customers May Soon Have Access to Voluntary RNG Program
Nearly everyone at this point understands how a wind turbine or a solar panel can help make the electricity used in your home more environmentally friendly. But how the heck does a landfill, or even a dairy farm, make the natural gas used in your home greener?
Lawrence, Kansas, residents appear on the verge of finding out. Lawrence is a part of a proposed pilot project announced by Black Hills Energy, the largest natural gas provider in the city. The company is seeking approval from state utility regulators that would allow people to voluntarily pay an extra amount on their monthly natural gas bills to help fund something called “renewable natural gas.”

Anaergia to Build One of Japan’s Largest Cow Manure to Renewable Energy Facilities
Anaergia Inc. announced plans to construct a biogas plant in Kasaoka, Okayama for Toyo Energy Solution Co., Ltd. The facility will produce renewable electricity using biogas made by anaerobically digesting cow manure from Okayama Prefecture farms.
The plant will prevent about 13,500 tonnes of CO2e in emissions from the manure and from fossil fuels that would have been used to generate the power, the equivalent of taking about 2,900 cars off the road for a year (calculated based on a 20-year Global Warming Potential).
