CHAR Technologies Ltd. announced the start of Phase 1 of the Thorold Renewable Natural Gas & Biocarbon Project at the Thorold Multimodal Hub in Ontario, Canada, with the commencement of the project lease on July 1.
Supported by the Natural Gas Innovation Fund, as well as Bioindustrial Innovation Canada, Phase 1 of this project will contribute to a lower carbon intense economy by providing direct drop-in solutions to replace the consumption of fossil fuels. This is an important step in the previously announced and proposed build, own, operate proprietary high temperature pyrolysis system at the Hub. Once fully operational, the project is anticipated to simultaneously produce renewable natural gas and biocarbons, converted from clean woody feedstocks that would otherwise be destined for landfills.
Hydron Energy Receives Funding from B.C. Clean Energy Catalyst in Its Inaugural Open Call for Innovation
Hydron Energy Inc. announced it has received one of the first funding awards granted from the newly established B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE). Hydron is building a first-of-a-kind gas upgrader, the INTRUPTor I-Multi, to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from biogas.
“Hydron is commercializing a proven platform technology new to the clean fuel market. This timely support will help demonstrate how our breakthrough product significantly reduces the cost of upgrading biogas to RNG and saves cash for both project developer and site owner,” said Hydron Energy President and CEO Soheil Khiavi.
Natural Gas Could Power New Chapter in Manure-to-Energy
At a few pennies per kilowatt-hour, farmers don’t make much from the electricity they generate from cow manure. So producers like Jason Burroughs are turning to markets clear across the country to sell a more promising type of power: renewable natural gas. “I think farms have a big opportunity to be part of the solution, basically from a lot of what we do every day,” said Burroughs.
California’s low-carbon fuel standard is driving changes in the way farmers like Burroughs turn manure into energy. After years struggling to make enough money from electricity sales to maintain aging generators, Burroughs and other farmers are switching to RNG, which generates credits for California’s low-carbon fuel standard program and could give new purpose to manure digester systems that might otherwise go idle.

Aemetis Acquires 24 Acre Site in Riverbank, California, for Carbon Capture and Sequestration Injection Well
Aemetis, Inc. announced the purchase of 24 acres, known as “Parcel B” on the Riverbank, California, Industrial Complex site, to develop a Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) injection well.
The company plans to construct a characterization well to obtain required data and final injection well design information that will be used for the EPA Class VI CO2 injection well permit application for the sequestration of approximately one million metric tonnes per year of CO2.

Maine Dairy Digester in the Works to Turn Cow Manure into Gas, Heating Homes
Flood Brothers Farm in Clinton, Maine, will soon be home to what's known as a renewable natural gas dairy digester. It will be able to produce methane from cow manure brought there from local farms, and that gas will be used to heat homes and businesses in the area.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the farm in what's known as the Dairy Capital of Maine Wednesday morning. Peaks Renewables, a subsidiary of Summit Utilities is overseeing the project.

EPA Awards $200,000 to San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition in Colorado for Food Waste Project
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $200,000 to the San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition for a food waste processing project that will help divert food and other organic waste from landfills. The Valley Roots Food Hub, a program of the San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition, plans to install a high-efficiency anaerobic digestion system at its Mosca, Colorado campus to process food and organic waste and turn it into fuel.
“Keeping food waste out of landfills and converting it to fuel is a powerful tool for combatting the climate crisis. Projects like these can meet local needs and address global challenges,” said EPA Regional Administrator KC Becker. “This project will be innovative for the San Luis Valley and will provide opportunities for demonstration, education, and expansion into other parts of the region.”
Marvel Turns 3, Expands Biomethane Services to Canada and Europe
Marvel Power Group is celebrating its 3rd anniversary by expanding its brokerage services to Canada and Europe. In addition to covering new geographies, Marvel will also begin structuring deals for CO2, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon offsets and hydrogen.
In Q1 2022, Marvel closed its first term deal with a Canadian counterparty, successfully structuring a 10-year project offtake for carbon-negative green gas. Currently, Marvel holds a significant pipeline of demand from parties seeking renewable natural gas for U.S. transportation, Science-Based Targets achievement, Canadian Clean Fuels and European International Sustainability & Carbon Certification programs.
