What is Renewable Natural Gas?
Michigan Business Beat, hosted by Chris Holman, discusses economic development, new or unusual entrepreneurial initiatives, and successful business practices from different regions and industries around Michigan with a wide range of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Barr Engineering Co. Senior Environmental Scientist Jason Linkimer joined Michigan Business Beat’s Chris Holman to talk about Renewable Natural Gas, or RNG. In the discussion, Jason covers what exactly RNG is, what role it could play in Michigan’s future, and what it could mean for businesses.
Canadian Government Invests in RNG Buses in Greater Victoria
Canada’s government has invested in renewable natural gas (RNG) buses as part of a public transport infrastructure initiative.
The Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia are investing in two projects through the Public Transport Infrastructure Stream, part of the Investing in Canada Plan. Part of the funding will be used to acquire around 15 medium-duty buses fuelled with compressed natural gas (CNG) or RNG to replace diesel-fuelled buses at the end of their useful life.
BP Partnering in Two RNG Ventures; SoCalGas Interconnecting More Landfill Gas
BP plc is advancing plans to develop more renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in the United States.
In the most recent deal, BP is joining Aria Energy to make RNG for transportation from captured methane from waste at three dairy farms in California. Nearly 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to be from the agricultural sector.
Digesters are to be installed at three dairy farms in the Central Valley to produce biogas from farm waste in the project, RNG Moovers.
“RNG can play an important role in decarbonizing the transportation sector and helping BP and the world get to net zero emissions,” said BP Senior Vice President Sean Reavis, who oversees the low carbon and trading business.
Biofuel Groups, States File Amicus Briefs in SCOTUS SRE Case
The Advanced Biofuels Association, Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, the National Biodiesel Board and a group of eight states on March 31 filed amicus briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court urging the court to affirm the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals’ January 2020 ruling on small refinery exemptions (SREs).
The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals on Jan. 24, 2020, issued a ruling that struck down three SREs that the court said were improperly issued by the EPA and held that the agency cannot “extend” exemptions to any small refineries whose earlier, temporary exemptions had lapsed.
How Manure Fits into Greenhouse Gas Plan
Colorado can significantly contribute to its goal of 100% power from renewable sources by 2040, while simultaneously boosting the economy in rural parts of the state. One of the state’s most plentiful, yet underutilized sources of clean energy can be found throughout Colorado, but it is not what you might expect.
This resource is our agricultural waste — which can be used to create renewable natural gas (RNG).
When animal waste decomposes it releases methane, which can be captured to create RNG, and used as natural gas to fuel vehicles, generate electricity, or power heating systems. Since RNG is compatible with existing natural gas infrastructure, RNG can make an immediate impact on the state’s renewable targets if we take action to support its production.
US Gain Builds Public RNG Fueling Station in Compton, California
AJR Trucking has partnered with U.S. Gain, a division of U.S. Venture, to build a renewable natural gas (RNG) fueling station in Compton, California, near the port of Long Beach. The station will help AJR Trucking and its sister company, MDB Transportation, produce greater emission reductions for the areas of California that need it most.
“We’re widely known for our use of alternative fuel, specifically natural gas, throughout our operations,” said AJR Trucking’s CEO Jack Khudikyan. “Now, thanks to a partnership with U.S. Gain, we’re able to expand use of clean RNG and fuel at a more convenient location. This new station brings environmental benefits to our fleet and ultimately, our community.”
Since their transition to natural gas, AJR Trucking has replaced more than one million gallons of diesel fuel with RNG, eliminating over 2,200 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent of removing 1,234 cars off the road or planting more than 149,747 trees.
Renewable Natural Gas, Battery Storage to Play Key Roles in Low-Emissions Future
The ability to store intermittent renewable energy from wind and solar and capturing methane emissions from common waste streams to displace natural gas usage are two technologies poised to play a bigger role in a lower carbon future.
While they play separate roles and are at different stages of adoption, energy storage and biogas — also known as renewable natural gas — are poised for growth under increasingly aggressive state and federal climate policies. They also both face similar barriers to more widespread deployment, notably cost and supportive policies.
Southern California Gas Company Sets Bold Net Zero Emissions Pledge
SoCalGas, the largest gas utility in the U.S., today announced the company's bold commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its operations and delivery of energy by 2045.
This commitment makes SoCalGas the largest gas distribution utility in North America to set a net zero target including scopes 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions, which would eliminate not only its own direct emissions, but also those generated by customers' energy delivered by SoCalGas' energy infrastructure.
SoCalGas' commitment aligns with the Paris Climate Agreement's recommendations and reflects the company's focus on supporting California with a resilient gas grid through the energy transition to support a carbon neutral economy.
Vermont 'Digester' Harvests Renewable Gas, Like Cow Manure and Food Waste, for Cooking
A well of natural gas is surfacing next to a dairy barn in Addison County — with not a drill rig in sight.
Digestion, on the other hand, is in full swing.
Without odor or fanfare, methane wrung from the manure of 900 cows and organic waste from regional cheese, beer, coffee and ice cream plants will enter the Vermont Gas Systems pipelines by mid-spring, the utility says.
Renewable Natural Gas is Crucial to Diversify our Clean Energy Sources
weather events can expose weaknesses in our energy infrastructure. But until we’re willing to make bold moves on how we approach energy, these incidents likely won’t change. From wildfires in California, or hurricanes on the East Coast, we know that climate change will continue to test our country’s ability to provide reliable power during emergency weather conditions.
While we can’t predict where and when the next major weather event will strike, we can develop and maintain a diverse portfolio of energy sources to keep local homes, businesses and mission-critical facilities powered when one source of energy is cut-off or damaged.
The majority of consumers want clean energy options. They also want reliability. One of the prevalent narratives by environmental groups is that electrification is the only path towards zero carbon emissions.
