Supporting Quebec Farmers’ Sustainable Clean Technology Projects

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeauannounced two new projects today totaling close to $900,000 under the Agricultural Clean Technology Program that will help Quebec farmers take action on climate change and capture new and emerging economic opportunities.

One of the investments will support Coop Agri-Énergie Warwick , the first agricultural cooperative dedicated to the production of renewable energy in Quebec , in the development of a cooperative agricultural biomethanizer plant. The plant will transform cow manure and organic residues from local industries into biomethane, a renewable natural gas. The federal government is providing Coop Agri-Énergie Warwick with up to $758,243 to carry out its novel initiative to further process the digestate produced by this eco-friendly plant, therefore enhancing its agricultural value to the benefit of its farmers' members.

Wärtsilä to Build BioLNG Production Facility in Germany

The plant will liquefy gas from the natural gas grid to produce carbon-neutral bioLNG and will have a capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes per year.

Wärtsilä vice-president for gas solutions Antti Kuokkanen said “The use of LNG as an emissions-reducing fuel in the marine and transportation industries is already well established, and to introduce bioLNG which can be mixed with LNG is the next obvious step in enabling a CO2-neutral transportation fuel. We look forward to continuing on our mission to enable sustainable societies with smart technology.”

Chevron Doubles Down on Renewable Natural Gas

(Bloomberg) -- Chevron Corp. is doubling down on its plan to turn cow manure into renewable natural gas.

The oil major formed a joint venture with waste solutions manager Brightmark LLC to build biomethane projects in multiple states, marking its second foray into producing renewable gas from dairy waste. Chevron plans to then buy the biomethane to power its trucks, buses and other vehicles currently running on compressed natural gas, according to an emailed statement.

Greenlane Renewables CEO Brad Douville: Greening the Natural Gas Grid

Worldwide, Greenlane Renewables provides biogas-upgrading systems that produce clean, low-carbon, renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG is derived from organic waste sources such as landfills, wastewater treatment plants and agricultural facilities. The nearly carbon-neutral fuel is indistinguishable from conventional natural gas and can be used in natural gas powered vehicles or injected into the natural gas grid.

When it comes to his company’s mission, Douville said, “The fundamental principle is to replace fossil natural gas in the gas distribution network with a renewable form.” Much like wind, solar and hydro power have cleaned up the electricity grid, RNG can green the gas grid.

New Online Tool Demonstrates How Companies Can Reduce Their Carbon Footprint

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Kinetrex Energy, the leading supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG) in the Midwest, released a new online RNG emissions calculatorthat makes it simple for companies to measure their carbon emissions as a first step in going “greener”. Users enter their annual natural gas consumption and the calculator automatically provides the environmental impact by transitioning to cleaner RNG.

“You cannot improve what you cannot measure,” said Aaron Johnson, President and CEO of Kinetrex Energy. “Our emissions calculator gives companies a simple tool to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and shows them how easy and affordable it can be to switch to RNG.”

Should We Electrify Everything?

Even in the midst of the pandemic, with wildfires and storms raging, it is imperative to get on with fighting climate change. This crisis is also an opportunity to chart a green recovery, transition to a post -fossil fuel economy, and ramp up renewables rapidly.

Some renewables advocates insist we should "electrify everything" and exclude all biofuel options, because electric motors are more efficient than combustion engines, even when they run on low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels. But electrification is not a panacea, and doesn’t always represent the swiftest or surest path to decarbonization.

Greenlane Renewables Signs $7.7 Million System Supply Contract for Brightmark RNG Project in Florida

Greenlane to supply biogas upgrading systems to returning customer, Brightmark, for a project generating RNG from dairy farms for injection into the local gas grid.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Greenlane Renewables Inc. (“Greenlane”) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd., has signed an $7.7 million (US$5.8 million) contract for a new renewable natural gas (“RNG”) project developed by San Francisco, California-based Brightmark LLC (“Brightmark”). The multiple-site dairy farm project in the State of Florida will utilize Greenlane’s pressure swing adsorption (“PSA”) biogas upgrading systems.

“This is a showcase project and second contract with Brightmark, one of the leading RNG project developers in the United States,” said Brad Douville, President & CEO of Greenlane. “We’re honored to be a trusted collaborator for this exciting new project in Florida.”

Renewable Natural Gas Facility Coming to Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS — Ontario will soon be home to a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility, which will create local jobs and stimulate regional economic development, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. The Niagara Falls Renewable Natural Gas plant will be the largest of its kind in Ontario and will generate enough clean renewable energy from landfill waste to heat 8,750 homes across the country and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 48,000 tonnes.

Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and Bill Walker, Associate Minister of Energy, joined representatives from Enbridge and Walker Industries in Niagara Falls today to formally announce the $42 million facility.

Hyliion Touts Hybrid Model to Electrify Carbon-Heavy Trucking Industry

Texas-based Hyliion hit public markets last week with a business model that CEO Thomas Healy said will speed up the trucking industry's transition to electric.

"Trucking is all about moving goods from point A to point B and doing it as economically as possible," Healy told Cheddar. "What we're able to do is take both the emission savings and the cost savings and bring those together and offer a solution that's actually net carbon-negative emissions."

Hydrogen-Based Heating Could Help UK Reach Net-Zero Carbon by 2050

Currently, non-renewable natural gas from fossil fuels is used to supply half of Europe’s heat demand, with national shares as high as 80 per cent in the Netherlands and the UK. However, the UK has committed to developing an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and one of the ways to achieve this might involve switching natural gas for hydrogen.

Hydrogen has long been hailed as a clean alternative to natural gas. It produces only water when consumed, and it can be distributed through existing infrastructure such as pipelines with minimal adjustments. Yet there is little understanding of the various requirements of this transition, including its cost.
