California Expands Definition of RNG
Under a bill passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the new definition of renewable natural gas includes energy that comes from additional forms of organic waste such as dead trees, agricultural waste and vegetation removed for wildfire mitigation.
AB 3163 will help California manage wildfires with reduced forest debris and will also lower greenhouse gas emissions.
“California took another step in the fight against climate change by joining leaders like Oregon who are turning their organic waste problem into an affordable and renewable energy solution,” said Southern California Gas Co. in statement. “Renewable natural gas can help reverse planet warming emissions.”

Renewable Natural Gas Challenges “One-Size Fits All” Vision of Electrification
Regardless of which Administration is in charge next year, or what party controls the Congress, these leaders will be tasked with addressing our energy challenges and rebuilding our economy. Moving the needle on both of these challenges, will require a balance of bold action, innovative technologies, and pragmatic solutions.
When it comes to energy solutions to invigorate our economy and slow the pace of climate change, some have asserted that electrification alone, is the most viable solution. But this is a false proposition. It would be a mistake to romanticize a “one-size fits all” approach that proposes that electrification is the only viable route to a successful energy transition. If we are serious about lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and getting our economy back on track, renewable natural gas (RNG) must be a part of the solution.

Chevron, Brightmark Partner on Dairy Biomethane Fuel Projects
Brightmark LLC and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. today announced the formation of a joint venture, Brightmark RNG Holdings LLC, to own projects across the United States to produce and market dairy biomethane, a renewable natural gas (RNG).
Equity investments by each company in the new venture will fund construction of infrastructure and commercial operation of dairy biomethane projects in multiple states. Chevron will purchase RNG produced from these projects and market the volumes for use in vehicles operating on compressed natural gas. Marathon Capital acted as exclusive financial advisor to Brightmark in establishing the partnership with Chevron.

California Boosts RNG, Improves Wildfire Protection
California Gov. Gavin Newsom last month signed legislation to turn the biomass from forest waste and dead trees into renewable natural gas (RNG).
According to the California Forestry and Fire Protection Department, aka CalFIRE, the state has nearly 150 million dead trees. Studies have pinpointed sources throughout the nation for producing RNG, including woody forest waste. The Illinois-based Gas Technology Institute has estimated that more than 75 Bcf/year of RNG could be produced from dead trees over a 30-year period.

Red River Biorefinery Operates Facility with Renewable Natural Gas
The Red River Biorefinery (RRB) announced today that it has expanded production to supply ethanol that meets the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) purity and quality standards to the hand sanitizer market. To help meet the increase in global demand for hand sanitizer products due to COVID-19, RRB is now supplying hand sanitizer manufacturers with safe, high-quality ethanol products with one of the lowest carbon footprints available on the market today.
The Red River Biorefinery in Grand Forks, North Dakota, uses excess agricultural byproducts as a feedstock to produce pharmaceutical-grade (USP) ethanol for hand sanitizers and disinfectants.

Ontario Energy Board Approved Enbridge’s application to offer a Voluntary Renewable Natural Gas Program
On September 24, 2020 the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) issued a Decision and Order approving Enbridge Gas Inc.’s (Enbridge) application to offer a Voluntary Renewable Natural Gas Program (RNG Program), on a pilot or test basis. Residential and small business customers that take part in the RNG Program will pay a charge of $2 per month, which will be shown separately on their bills. The RNG Program is expected to start in January 2021, and can continue only as a pilot project until the OEB issues a further decision on the RNG Program, either as part of Enbridge’s next major rate application or in response to a stand-alone application filed by Enbridge.
The OEB noted that renewable natural gas (RNG) is a renewable energy source that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional natural gas, and should be explored as a means of diversifying the gas supply portfolio. RNG is a higher cost alternative to conventional natural gas, and the OEB decided that exploring the addition of RNG is best done on a voluntary and pilot basis. The learnings from the pilot would lead to a better understanding of RNG options and provide information to assess future RNG program proposals.

RNG Trucks Showcased in Port of Long Beach Clean Truck Parade
Southern California trucking companies have showcased their near-zero-emission (NZE) natural gas trucks in a clean truck parade to commemorate the opening of the new Port of Long Beach bridge. The seven fleet operators – NFI, Total Transportation Solutions Inc. (TTSI), MDB Transportation, Tradelink Transport, Pacific 9 Transportation, Overseas Freight and Green Trucking – collectively operate 157 natural gas heavy-duty trucks that log more than 6.4 million miles per year, hauling freight daily to and from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
In total, more than 700 natural gas trucks regularly haul freight to and from the two ports, representing approximately 6% of the active drayage truck fleet.
