New RNG Facility Proposed at County Landfill to Convert RNG to Electricity

Chautauqua County is looking to sell natural gas generated at the county landfill to a third party instead of trying to convert it to electricity themselves.

According to a memorandum from Stephen M. Abdella, county attorney, to the legislature and county executive, “the county owns and operates a landfill gas-to-energy generating facility at the county landfill that has provided substantial net revenues to the county since 2010. However, the depressed market conditions for sale of electricity generated by landfill gas have caused a significant reduction in the revenues received by the county, and it is now more advantageous to directly sell the landfill gas to a third party who will convert it to renewable natural gas (RNG).”

Vanguard Renewables Converts Beer Into Renewable Energy

In the concert halls, stadiums and bars across the U.S. that have fallen silent during the coronavirus pandemic, an unusual problem has emerged: what to do with the vast quantity of beer that’s gone past its sell-by date.

In March, even before the lockdowns became widespread, about 10 million gallons of beer held by retailers had already expired, according to estimates from the National Beer Wholesalers Association. As thousands of kegs are now being returned to distributors daily, Vanguard Renewables in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is among companies seeking to make use of it by turning the beverage into natural gas for electricity generation. Others will use it to make hand sanitizer, but a great deal of the beer will simply be decanted and dumped.

U.S. Gain Completes Construction on Natural Gas Fueling Station

U.S. Gain, a company that specializes in the development, procurement and distribution of alternative fuel for the transportation market, has completed the construction of a private natural gas fueling station for Testa Produce Inc. The new modular station will supply fuel for the company’s fleet of delivery vehicles at its headquarters in Chicago.

Testa operates a fleet of 50 delivery vehicles that are used to transport fresh produce to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, country clubs and other business segments throughout Illinois and regions of Indiana and Wisconsin. Today, 40 of their vehicles run on natural gas, with plans to convert the remainder of their fleet in the future.

City of Boulder Partners with Tetra Tech and CGRS for Biogas Enhancement Project

Biogas produced from wastewater digesters will be converted into renewable natural gas (RNG) for vehicle fuel, delivered to community partners for use after injection into the Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo) pipeline. Construction began in January and is scheduled for completion later this summer.

The city has contracted with Tetra Tech and CGRS, Inc. to design and build the biogas-to-renewable-natural-gas (RNG)-conditioning system, which will replace the WRRF’s cogeneration system, which is at the end of its useful service life. The project is one of only a handful of similar projects in Colorado.

ANGI Energy Systems Develops CNG Fleet Fueling Solution

ANGI Energy Systems has developed a CNG fleet fueling solution that is tailored for quick deployment with minimal site costs.

Infrastructure cost is often the most costly and time-consuming step to building a CNG fleet. The cost associated with constructing a CNG refueling station can vary significantly depending on size and application. Given the wide variety of vehicle types, applications and duty cycles, there is no single formula for designing a CNG vehicle refueling station and estimating the associated footprint.

California Plans for Future of Gas System

As a wave of local governments in California roll out policies that promote the electrification of buildings, the state’s energy regulators have been saddled with a complicated task: planning for the future of its natural gas system.

Around 30 cities in California have passed building codes that reduce their reliance on gas, according to the Sierra Club, the most recent being Santa Cruz, which in March passed an ordinance to “eliminate natural gas infrastructure and associated greenhouse gas emissions in new buildings where all-electric infrastructure can be most practicably integrated.” But while it’s "fantastic" that individual municipalities are showing leadership, this is a patchwork approach, Michael Colvin, director of regulatory and legislative affairs at the Environmental Defense Fund’s (EDF) California energy program, told Utility Dive.

Farmers and Utilities are Converting Dairy Waste into Energy

When Randy Jordan, a fifth-generation dairy farmer in central Massachusetts, looked into turning manure from his 300 cows into natural gas more than a decade ago, he just wanted to find a way to lower his increasingly painful electric bill.

He knew that biodigesters, a sort of modern alchemy that transforms poop into profits, had been around for decades. But many of the tanks, where microorganisms digest manure and turn it into methane gas that can be burned as fuel or converted to electricity, had been abandoned. They proved too complicated to manage. “It was challenging,” he remembered, “and the money didn’t work.”

Then he met Bill Jorgenson, a longtime energy consultant with a vision.
