JetBlue First Major US Airline Going Carbon-Neutral in 2020
Earlier this month, JetBlue announced that it will begin offsetting carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) from jet fuel for all domestic JetBlue flights starting in July 2020, making it the first major U.S. airline to take this step towards reducing its contribution to global warming.
JetBlue also announced plans to start flying with sustainable aviation fuel in mid-2020 on flights from San Francisco International Airport.

38,000 Indiana Dairy Cows Are Making Renewable Gas
DVO, Inc. recently announced the commissioning of their newest "Two-Stage Linear Vortex™" digester at Prairies Edge Dairy Farms in Fair Oaks, Indiana, replacing the prominent dairy's outdated CSTR/complete-mix digester and combining its biogas with that generated by the original DVO digester installed in 2008.
"Given the same inputs, our newest DVO digester produces more biogas than our old [upright tanks/complete-mix] digester ever made on a good day, by at least 25%," says Carl Ramsey, Prairies Edge Operations Manager

New Technique Could Accelerate Waste-to-methane Production at University of Alberta
University of Alberta engineers have found a way to turn waste fat, oil and grease into a steady supply of renewable energy.
In a recent study, environmental engineering master's student Bappi Chowdhury and his colleagues found that adding conductive materials to the waste products could potentially turn them into a reliable feedstock, allowing for a production rate of up to 70 percent more biomethane—a renewable energy source—from a mixture of fat, oil and grease and ordinary food waste in an anaerobic digester.

Gov. Inslee Pitches Clean-fuel Standard at SeaTac Airport
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday called for passage of a low-carbon fuel standard at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, saying the policy would spur innovation and increase access to biofuels for airlines.
Aviation fuels are exempt from the proposed statewide policy, but fuel suppliers to airlines could opt in to the program and earn credits, and possibly money from the program.
“It’s the best way to get biofuels into the airline industry,” Inslee said, adding that it would incentivize the port to scale up biofuel infrastructure.

Smithfield, together with Duke Energy, Completes RNG distribution system in North Carolina
Smithfield Foods Inc. announced on Jan. 8 that it is now producing renewable natural gas (RNG) from the wastewater treatment system at its Tar Heel, North Carolina, pork processing plant.
The company partnered with Duke Energy and OptimaBio LLC, a bioenergy project developer, to complete the project that will help power 2,000 homes and businesses in the area.
Smithfield said the project cost $14 million to complete and will help the company’s overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2025.
With its alliance with Duke Energy, roughly 140,000 dekatherms of RNG per year will be transported to natural gas plants and used to generate electricity for people.

Utah Think Tank says State Should Cut CO2 Emissions 80% by 2050
Utah should strive to slash air pollution by half and carbon dioxide emissions by 80% in coming decades, a goal that would demand commitment from government leaders, industry and each state resident, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute argues.
The University of Utah think tank on Monday published a draft road map for cleaning up the air and confronting climate change in the state. What’s at stake is the health of Utahns, the welfare of the state’s economy and the viability of a 2030 or 2034 Olympic bid, according to the institute.

New York League of Conservation Voters Launches Clean Fuels NY Coalition
A coalition led by the New York League of Conservation Voters is launching a campaign on Monday meant to push for clean fuel policy in New York.
The groups comprise a range of industries and advocacy issues, including the environmental, public health, scientists, car manufacturers and clean fuel providers.
In particular, the groups want the passage of a low carbon fuel standard for New York’s largest greenhouse gas emissions source: the transportation sector.
The hope is that by having transportation fuel providers adhere to low carbon sources, there would be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as a result.

Renewable Natural Gas Creating Opportunity to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Consumers are now shifting away from fossil fuels for their heating and energy needs and moving toward more renewable forms of energy. At the same time, governments are handing down tighter emissions regulations to many of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries.
While wind and solar power are typically at the forefront of the renewable energy mix, renewable natural gas (RNG) is also increasingly being used as an alternative to fossil fuels. Derived from biogas captured at organic waste facilities, RNG can be easily deployed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the two most critical industries in the fight against climate change: utilities and transportation.

RNG: A Growing Sustainable Energy Source in British Columbia
After the uncertain rise and precipitous fall of a number of Canada’s energy-from-waste (EfW) industries, it may have been easy to underestimate the commercial opportunities for renewable natural gas (RNG).
After all, the corporate community lost much of its interest in capital intensive and technologically uncertain EfW projects at some point following the 2008 crash. With a few notable exceptions, EfW became a local, and mostly municipal, waste management issue, usually undertaken on a small scale. This has been quietly, yet rapidly, changing with the growth of RNG and the related environmental pressures for more resource recovery.

Greenlane Secures New $8.3 Million Biogas Upgrading Contract for Landfill Gas to RNG Project in California
Greenlane Renewables Inc. (“Greenlane”) (TSXV:GRN) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd., has secured a new $8.3 million (US$6.3 million) biogas upgrading contract with a customer in California, whose name is being withheld at this time for confidentiality reasons. Engineering work will begin immediately on the California-based landfill project. Order fulfilment will begin immediately upon completion of permitting and approval of submittals by the customer, expected by early to mid 2020, with delivery expected to occur within approximately six months of commencement.
