Gov. Inslee Sees Need For A Low-carbon Fuel Standard in Washington

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday laid out another set of ambitious policy priorities to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, focusing this legislative session on transforming the state’s carbon-laden transportation system.

The governor, during a morning news conference in Olympia, asked the Legislature to pass a low-carbon fuel standard, a requirement for ride-hailing companies to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions, a bill to create a zero-emission vehicle program and legislation to “align Washington’s emission targets with the latest science,” which would make them more ambitious.

Report Supports National Grid’s Vision for Lower Carbon Gas Network

National Grid is encouraged by a first-of-its-kind study that shows the availability of renewable natural gas (RNG) and its potential to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change.

RNG is pipeline-compatible gaseous fuel derived from biogenic or other renewable sources that have lower lifecycle carbon dioxide equivalent emissions than geological natural gas. The study, co-sponsored by National Grid and other utilities, and conducted by ICF in partnership with the American Gas Foundation, estimates that by 2040, about 4,513 trillion British thermal units (Btus) of RNG could be produced annually, at a competitive cost. This measurement of RNG Btus, a universally accepted measurement of the heating value of gas, represents a 95 percent reduction in natural gas emissions from the residential sector and enough production to meet all U.S. residential heating demand.

A Year of 100% Renewables: Clean Energy, Storage and Renewable Gas

In clean energy circles, 2019 may be remembered as the "Year of 100 Percent." Five states plus Puerto Rico passed laws in 2019 targeting 100% clean energy, while dozens of corporations and utilities made voluntary pledges.

Amid federal inaction despite increasingly visible climate impacts and overwhelming scientific consensus, clean energy's current hold on the public imagination is undeniably a bright spot.

New Jersey Natural Gas Announces 100% Renewable Offset of Its Facility and Fleet Natural Gas Emissions

Continuing its leadership on corporate sustainability and reducing emissions, New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) today announced it has completely offset its facility and fleet use of natural gas with renewable energy. By purchasing Renewable Natural Gas Attributes (RNGAs), renewable energy credits generated from the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), all emissions from natural gas use at its facilities and from the use of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fleet vehicles are being offset.

The volume of emissions offset through the purchase is the equivalent of supplying the natural gas needs of more than 400 homes for an entire year.

Renewable Natural Gas Keeps Climate Change at Bay

Fossil fuels must be replaced completely by green fuels. This means that the resources we use can be nothing but wind and solar power. There is only one way in which climate change can be tackled, and that is to invest heavily in solar panels and wind turbines for production of power. Our solar panel and wind turbine capacity must be big enough for us to produce the amount of power that is required to produce green fuels.

Green fuels are produced by converting green power into green gas that can be used for heating our homes, supplying industry with energy, and for providing energy for air traffic, shipping, trains and agriculture.

Partnership Developing Nationwide Network of Dairy Waste-to-energy Projects

An expansion of an alliance involving Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is designed to reduce on-farm greenhouse gas emissions while improving the economic viability of family-owned dairy farms.

Under the new partnership, Vanguard Renewables Ag will design, develop and operate dairy farm anaerobic digestion/methane capture projects, and Dominion Energy will own the projects and market the renewable natural gas (RNG).

Delta to purchase 10 million gallons per year of sustainable aviation fuel from Gevo

US airline Delta has signed a long-term offtake agreement with renewable fuel producer Gevo for the purchase of 10 million gallons per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

SAF provides significant environmental benefits, as the lifecycle carbon footprint of the fuel can be up to 75% lower than conventional jet fuel.

The agreement complements the airline’s recent $2 million (€1.79 million) investment in Northwest Advanced Bio-fuels for a feasibility study of a facility to produce SAF and other biofuel products in the US state of Washington.

Opinion: Hog Organic Waste Project a Lesson in Clean Energy

Last week, the Energy and Commerce Committee hosted an Energy and Environment Innovation Showcase in Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to highlight companies and organizations from across the United States that are using innovative technologies to address climate change and strengthen our energy security.

It showcased how supporting research and technologically driven policy can achieve significant results in addressing climate change. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change, I recognize the importance of providing reliable, yet affordable, energy sources that are not detrimental to the environment — a view shared by both Democrats and Republicans. We will continue to work together to develop pragmatic solutions and realistic goals, which is a balance that was highlighted in the showcase.

Element Markets Recognized For Multiple Awards By Environmental Finance

It has been 20 years since Environmental Finance started conducting its annual surveys of the environmental markets.

The Market Rankings were set up in 2000 to assess sentiment and identify the best performing companies operating in tradeable, environmentally-themed markets.

20 years on, much has changed. Dozens of countries have some form of emissions trading scheme and many more have plans to implement one. Even if the prices at which allowances currently trade are typically not high enough to cause drastic changes in corporate behaviour, this sends a clear signal that governments are increasingly seeing the need to put a price on carbon.

EPA Delivers Final Rule Containing 2020 RVOs, SRE Plan to OMB

The U.S. EPA delivered a final rule regarding the Renewable Fuel Standard to the White House Office of Management and Budget on Dec. 6. The final rule includes the 2020 RFS renewable volume obligation (RVO), the 2021 RVO for biomass-based diesel, and the agency’s plan to address future small refinery exemptions (SREs). OMB review marks a final step before the rule is released publicly.

The EPA released its proposed rule to set 2020 RVOs and the 2021 RVO for biomass-based diesel in July. The proposed rule aims to require 20.04 billion gallons of renewable fuels to be blended with the U.S. fuel supply next year, up from 19.92 billion gallons in 2019. The proposed RVO includes 5.04 billion gallons of advanced biofuels, 2.43 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel, and 540 million gallons of cellulosic fuel. The 2020 RVO for biomass-based diesel was finalized in a separate rulemaking last year. The rulemaking also proposed to set the 2021 RVO for biomass-based diesel at 2.43 billion gallons, level with the 2020 RVO.
