One of Canada’s First RNG Plants Now Fully Operational in Blenheim, Ontario
One of the first renewable natural gas (RNG) plants in Canada is now fully operational in Blenheim, Ontario. The $100-million facility, built by Waste Connections with support from Enbridge Gas at the Ridge Landfill, captures landfill gas generated by decomposing waste and converts it into carbon-neutral, pipeline-quality RNG. The clean gas is injected into the natural gas distribution system, supplying roughly 18,000 homes and businesses, or about 40 percent of Chatham-Kent.
Project officials say the plant has run smoothly since being commissioned, recently reaching 98 percent uptime. The facility removes oxygen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide and other compounds before injecting clean gas into the pipeline, and it is expected to offset more than 110,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, supporting Ontario’s 2030 climate goals.
