Advances in Natural Gas Engine Technology Position RNG as a Practical Path for Heavy-Duty Fleets
A new generation of high-efficiency natural gas engines, paired with rapidly expanding renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure, is positioning natural gas as a commercially viable, performance-ready fuel for heavy-duty fleets. As diesel prices surge amid global market volatility, domestic RNG has remained relatively stable, widening the cost gap and reinforcing its value as a cost-control strategy for long-haul freight operators.
Produced from organic waste streams such as landfills, dairy farms and wastewater facilities, RNG is fully compatible with existing pipelines and fueling stations, allowing fleets to adopt it without new infrastructure. Backed by federal incentives like the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit and state low-carbon fuel programs, RNG supply has grown sharply in recent years, making it an already-available pathway to lower-emission, cost-effective heavy-duty transportation.
