"RNG production locations present significant safety concerns since they necessarily involve the concentration of flammable gases. Additionally, toxic gases are normally present (notably hydrogen sulfide), often at high pressure, along with electrical equipment. This session will highlight safety practices required in RNG production locations including:
• An overview of common hazards present,
• Definitions of hazardous locations within the National Electrical Code (NEC) and NEC NFPA 70 the Standard for manufacturers, designers and installers.
• API RP 500 Recommended Practice for the Classification of Locations for Electrical Installations
• AGA XF-0277 – Classification of Locations for Electrical Locations in Gas Utility Areas
• Personal Protective Equipment,
• Gas detection techniques and best practices.

10:00am - 11:00am: Gas Quality Analysis to Conform to EPA CFR Part 80.155
"The Environmental Protection Agency has released several requirements for RNG under the Renewable Fuel Standard Program. Additional guidance has evolved during the past three years, directly impacting the methods and equipment required to produce qualified RNG. This session will provide an overview of CFR Part 80.155 with respect to gas quality including:
• Definitions and highlights according to Federal and regional LCFS programs,
• Fundamentals of common and required gas analyzers,
• An overview of analysis requirements complying with CFR Part 80.155,
• Common techniques deployed at successful production facilities,
• Lessons learned from nearly ten years of biogas and RNG analysis.

"Gas chromatography remains the preferred online method for the determination of major gas components in the natural gas industry with complementary analysis for specific contaminants. Chromatography in particular demands frequent maintenance and periodic attention in order to retain measurement accuracy. This session will provide an introduction to specific instrumentation including:
• Gas chromatography theory and operation,
• Gas chromatography calibration and maintenance,
• Introduction to absorbance spectroscopy with an emphasis on TDLAS,
• Electrochemical instrumentation and techniques,
• Periodic or spot sampling techniques.

Proper sample conditioning for prior to introduction into an analyzer is critical to both ensure the integrity of the measurement and to protect the analyzer from harm. Without proper sample conditioning, production downtime will increase significantly, driving costs higher. Since gas conditions impact sampling requirements, systems for raw, blended, and final sales gas are different.
This session will review the importance of sample conditioning and appropriate systems for each segment. Topics will include:
Introduction to sampling and sampling systems for gas,
Specific sampling requirements for RNG in various stages,
Sampling requirements by analyzer technology,
Lessons learned from nearly ten years of biogas and RNG sampling.

As renewable natural gas becomes a growing component of North America's energy infrastructure, accurate measurement of gas volumes and energy content has become increasingly important.
Custody transfer measurement represents the point where ownership of the gas changes hands, typically from the RNG producer to a utility or pipeline operator. Because financial transactions depend on these measurements, accuracy and reliability are critical. Points covered will include:
Defining custody transfer measurement and the importance to RNG applications.
Focus on the predominant meter types typically used at RNG sites (Ultrasonic, Orifice, Coriolis, Rotary)
Advantages and limitations of each metering technology
Supporting instrumentation and equipment.
Industry standards and regulations

RNG production facilities represent complex and often isolated biochemical plants, often operated with little or no full-time staff. Ultimately, the success of an RNG project depends on the safe and efficient operations of the plant.
This session will focus on the operating challenges of an established RNG plant, across a variety of feedstocks. Topics will include:
Keys to a successful RNG plant start-up,
Transitioning from construction to operation,
Aging issues within an RNG facility,
Staffing and training of personnel at an RNG facility,
Variations in RNG plant operations by type.
