Op-Ed: Why the US Needs to Invest in Renewable Natural Gas

The Iran war has roiled energy markets and made a strong case for boosting domestic renewable energy as a buffer against fossil fuel volatility.

With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz halted, other routes threatened, and oil and fertiliser prices surging, renewables are more attractive — though not everywhere. Electric vehicle and heat pump sales are up in Europe, but in the US and Canada, the war’s disruptions have increased fossil fuel production.

Yet, for less than the cost of the war, the US could expand its renewable energy and fertiliser production to more than it previously imported through the Strait. This is well worth doing. Carbon-intensive fossil fuels are untenable for energy security and the climate, and clean energy is by far the better investment.

Audrey Zibelman Appointed Chair of NYSERDA Board

Governor Kathy Hochul announced her appointment of Audrey Zibelman as Chair of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Board of Directors. Ms. Zibelman’s appointment was confirmed by the New York State Senate on June 4, 2026.

“I am pleased to appoint Audrey Zibelman, a world-renowned energy expert, as NYSERDA Board Chair, a selection that will continue the State’s strong leadership in the clean energy transition,” said Governor Hochul. “Audrey’s familiarity with New York’s energy system, its policies, and her previous contributions as chair of the New York State Public Service Commission, make her the ideal person to provide the guidance we need to continue to pursue an all-of-the-above energy approach that serves all New Yorkers.”

Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill in Greensburg, Indiana have commissioned a new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production unit using Waga's patented WAGABOX® cryogenic purification technology. The facility represents Waga's eighth operational RNG unit in the United States.

Divert, US Cold Storage Convert 2.5M Pounds of Unsold Food into Energy and Fertilizer, Advancing Sustainability Goals for Food and Beverage Brands

Divert, Inc., a circular economy company on a mission to prevent food from being wasted, today announced that its partnership with United States Cold Storage (US Cold), the premier provider of refrigerated warehousing and logistics, processed more than 2.5 million pounds of unsold food and beverage products from seven California facilities in its first 15 months. The material was transformed into renewable energy and fertilizer instead of going to landfill.

Ireland Connects First Biomethane Plant to Gas Network

Bia Energy’s €90m renewable biomethane gas facility in Huntstown, Co. Dublin has become the first plant in Ireland to connect to the national gas network.

The plant is using short-dated and surplus packaged food from the retail and hospitality sectors, as well materials from agriculture and food production and converting these organic items into renewable biomethane.
