Op-Ed: SAF Prices Shouldn’t Rise with Conventional Jet Fuel

Renewed conflict in the Strait of Hormuz is once again driving up fossil fuel prices. For airlines already reeling from the fuel price surge since the Iran War began in late February, the lesson is clear: volatility is the new normal. Conventional jet fuel skyrocketed from $2.50/gallon in mid-February to a peak of nearly $5/gallon in late April in the US, with international markets experiencing even higher spikes. This makes sense, as about 20% of global oil and gas supplies normally flows through the Strait of Hormuz, and that was largely taken off the market.

The Rapid to Replace Diesel Buses With CNG/RNG Buses by July 2027

Grand Rapids transit agency The Rapid has approved the purchase of eight new 40-foot buses running on compressed and renewable natural gas, funded through a federal grant plus state matching funds with no local public dollars required. Once delivered in July 2027, the roughly $8 million order will let the agency retire its remaining diesel buses and replace five aging Silver Line diesel-electric hybrids, growing its CNG/RNG fixed-route fleet from 131 to 139 vehicles as part of a broader push to eliminate diesel by 2048.

Springfield Invites Private Partners for Renewable Gas Projects

The City of Springfield has issued a Request for Proposals inviting private developers to build renewable natural gas facilities at its Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill and Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant. After years exploring a design-build model that never reached construction, the city shifted to a developer-financed approach intended to lower taxpayer risk while still capturing methane-rich biogas and upgrading it to pipeline-quality RNG. Selected developers would handle financing, design, construction, and operations, plus manage environmental credits and other regulatory incentives. Proposals are due December 1, with an award decision expected in January 2027.
