Waste from Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factories is now Powering the Vermont Grid
At the Ben & Jerry’s factory in St. Albans, Vermont, thousands of gallons of ice cream waste are now being turned into biogas, creating energy for the state’s electric grid.
When factory workers start to produce a new flavor and switch the machinery from, say, Cherry Garcia to Chunky Monkey, they have to push all the leftover ice cream out of the pipes and rinse them with water so that the flavors don’t intermingle. That creates a lot of waste that can’t be sent to wastewater treatment plants.
How Ben & Jerry’s Is Recycling Food Waste into Energy
It may sound like the stuff of sci-fi movies, but diverting food waste from the landfill and converting it into electricity has become a real thing. William Brangham visited Ben & Jerry’s Vermont ice cream factory and the operations next door to find out how it works.
Transportation Market Conditions Present Questions About the Future
The transportation market continues to evolve for a variety of reasons, including economics, policy and consumer sentiment. There is no confusion that U.S. policy as it relates to the transportation sector and the environment has changed significantly in the first six months of 2025. Congress has voted to repeal EPA’s waiver that granted California the authority to ban combustion vehicle sales in 2035, tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles will sunset on September 30, 2025, EPA is preparing to reverse its endangerment finding for greenhouse gases, NEVI funds for charging infrastructure have been stopped, federal policy support for domestic fossil fuel production has increased, and trade relations with long-term friends have been thrown into a blender. Meanwhile, key economic indicators for transportation energy have improved for consumers, yet their feelings about the economy and transportation are not very optimistic. For much of this, the overall implications for the transportation market will not be realized for some time, but at the half-way point of 2025 it is worth looking at where the market is so we can better monitor how it develops over the next six months and beyond.
Energy Vision Report Finds Advanced Landfill Tech Could Cut US Methane Emissions Deeply at Low Cost While Yielding High Returns for Operators
Landfills are a major source of methane emissions – the third-largest in the U.S. after the agriculture and energy sectors. But by implementing practical, cost-effective measures, total landfill methane emissions can be halved while providing new revenue for operators, according to a report released today by the NGO Energy Vision, “Leading with Landfills: The Immense, Cost-Effective Potential of Advanced Technology to Reduce Methane Emissions at Landfills Nationwide.”
How Renewable Natural Gas Is Driving the Future of U.S. Transportation
There is a boom happening in the energy field, a scalable, clean and cost-effective solution that’s already reshaping how America moves: renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG is a fuel source produced from waste materials, compatible with any natural gas engine, no adjustments required.
