Small States Likely to Lead US in Clean Fuel Standards Rollouts: Event
'Think small' may be the theme to wider adoption of clean fuel standards across the US, according to speakers at an RNG Coalition event in Texas.
California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard program has been mired in legalese since mid-February while the most-recent iteration of a New York Clean Fuel Standard sits in the State Senate's Finance Committee, from which other versions have failed to advance in years past.
However, smaller states appear to be making progress.
Iowa Landfills Capture Methane and Convert It to Usable Natural Gas
When household waste decomposes at a landfill, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that traps significantly more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that large landfills monitor and capture the gas, but some landfills in Iowa are going a step further and “upgrading” the landfill gas into renewable natural gas.
AVEVA Powers Archaea Energy’s RNG Leadership With Cutting-edge Data Infrastructure
Digital transformation leader AVEVA is fueling the future of clean energy by powering the nation’s largest renewable natural gas (RNG) producer with advanced industrial intelligence.
This is even as AVEVA has been selected by Archaea Energy, the top RNG producer in the U.S., to deliver a powerful operations data management infrastructure that will supercharge performance across its expanding network of renewable energy plants.
EnviTec Commissions 100th EnviThan Unit
After successful cold commissioning and subsequent shipment to Denmark by sea, the 100th EnviThan biogas upgrading plant built by Germany-headed biogas technology all-rounder EnviTec Biogas AG is now ready for commercial operation.
The anniversary EnviThan biogas upgrading plant can now achieve an impressive total capacity of 1,510 Nm3 of biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG) per hour.
First Public Biomethane Injection Point To Open in Latvia
This summer, the first public biomethane injection point in Latvia, connected to the gas transmission network, will be opened in Dzukste.
This will allow biomethane producers to deliver the gas they produce by truck and inject it into the common system even if there is no direct connection to the distribution or transmission network, according to the single gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid (Conexus).
Doubling Down on Climate Leadership: WA Senate Votes To Strengthen Clean Fuels
On April 15, 2025, the Washington State Senate voted (25-23) to pass HB 1409 Concerning the Clean Fuel Standard (CFS), significantly improving Washington’s clean fuels program. The vote comes against the backdrop of recent federal attempts to stop state climate action, which has climate leaders and advocates naming state and local policymaking as the “final line of defense.”
House Majority Leader Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon (34th LD) was a key champion in getting the initial Clean Fuels program passed in 2021, and led this year’s push to pass an upgrade to the existing program. “With HB 1409, Washington is taking the next big step forward towards a clean transportation sector that protects our climate, our air quality, and our local economies,” he said. “Cleaner fuels will pay dividends for Washingtonians for years to come and further cement our status as a state leading the pack on climate action during a time of federal inaction and backsliding."
Vision RNG Closes $28.8 Million Sale of Investment Tax Credit Associated With Laurel Ridge RNG Project
Vision RNG, a leading developer of renewable natural gas (RNG) projects, announced today the successful sale of the investment tax credit (ITC) generated from its Laurel Ridge landfill gas-to-energy project located in Corbin, Kentucky. The transaction represents another step in Vision RNG’s strategy to monetize available tax incentives to support the expansion of sustainable energy infrastructure.
The Laurel Ridge RNG facility, developed in partnership with Waste Connections, captures methane emissions from the Laurel Ridge Landfill and converts them into pipeline-quality RNG, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing a reliable source of renewable energy.
Project Canary and Sniffer Robotics Partner to Transform Landfill Methane Emissions Monitoring and Quantification
Project Canary, an emissions measurement and reporting platform, and Sniffer Robotics, a pioneer in drone-based emissions monitoring, today announced a strategic partnership that will revolutionize methane emissions monitoring and quantification at landfill sites worldwide.
This collaboration integrates Sniffer Robotics' EPA-approved drone-based surface emissions measurement (SEM) data collection system with Project Canary's best-in-class emissions quantification models. The partnership creates an unprecedented solution that enhances emissions source detection, localization, and instant quantification to deliver actionable insights for landfill operators seeking to understand and mitigate their environmental impact.
Waga Energy Increases Its Green Syndicated Loan
France-headed landfill gas (LFG) to renewable natural gas (RNG) technology provider Waga Energy SA has announced that it has increased the amount of its EUR 100 million corporate syndicated loan signed in July 2024 by EUR 24 million.
According to a statement, the total syndicated loan amount now stands at EUR 124 million, with conditions remaining identical to those initially negotiated.
Montauk Breaks Ground on Oklahoma RNG Project
Montauk Renewables' subsidiary Tulsa LFG has broken ground on a 1,500 MMBtu/day renewable natural gas project at the American Environmental Landfill in Oklahoma, according to a company release.
The US renewable natural gas producer said the project in Tulsa is an extension of an existing agreement with the landfill and will use inlet gas feedstocks to produce the RNG.
