Republic Services Hits Emissions Reduction Target Early With 15% Decrease
Republic Services has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, which highlights the company's sustainability initiatives and progress toward its 2030 goals, including a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that will help support climate goals. As of 2023, Republic Services has reduced operational GHG emissions by 15%, versus a 2017 baseline, ahead of its interim target of a 10% reduction by 2025.
"Sustainability is our business. Through investments and innovations, Republic Services is transforming plastics circularity and advancing decarbonization solutions, helping meet the needs of our customers," said Jon Vander Ark, president and chief executive officer at Republic Services. Air Liquide To Design, Build and Deliver Its First MSW Biomethane Purifier in Latin America
In Brazil, Air Liquide will design, build and deliver its first unit in Latin America for purifying biomethane produced from solid waste, at the Cariacica (ES) landfill. The site, owned and operated by Marca Ambiental, receives half of all waste produced in Espírito Santo, Brazil. The new facility will be capable of transforming this waste and processing 2,500 cubic meters per hour of biogas into biomethane. At this rate, the site will have a total production capacity of 155 GWh/year of biomethane, which can be injected into the natural gas pipeline to supply energy to the local community. The site is expected to be operational in the second half of 2025.
WM Highlights M&A Ramp-Up, Investments in Recycling and RNG
WM achieved a 30% quarterly operating EBITDA margin for the first time, the company reported during its Thursday earnings call. It’s a milestone CEO Jim Fish touted as a result of ongoing technology investments, pricing, turnover reductions and other cost savings measures. Adjusted operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased by 10.3% year over year.
WM spent about $750 million on solid waste acquisitions through July. Fish highlighted the recent Winters Bros. Waste Systems acquisition as an important move into the Long Island, New York, region, while WM also carried out smaller tuck-in deals in its existing footprint in Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona, he said.
Sugar Beets at Heart of $28 Million Biogas Project in Wyoming
A $28 million plan is being launched in Wyoming to create biogas from sugar beets.
The company behind the effort is Cowboy Clean Fuels LLC based in Denver. It has the clean energy operation under construction in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin after receiving $13 million in venture capital money from a former Texas oilman and his investment group.
Case Study Webinar Recording: AstraZeneca, Vanguard Renewables U.S. RNG Agreement
On July 11, 2024, The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) held a webinar to explore the groundbreaking renewable natural gas (RNG) agreement between AstraZeneca and Vanguard Renewables. Speakers Andy Wirths from AstraZeneca, John Hanselman from Vanguard Renewables, and the RTC’s Ruth Checknoff discussed how the agreement to supply AstraZeneca with 650,000 MMBtu/year for 15 or more years contributes to the company’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its global operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 98% by 2026. Watch this recording to find out about the decision-making process, key outcomes, and lessons learned.
Bright Renewables and BerQ RNG Add Four Projects To Advance U.S. RNG Production
Bright Renewables, a leading force in the deployment of biogas upgrading and valorization technology, and BerQ RNG, a pioneer in transforming biogas into carbon-neutral, pipeline quality Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), have joined hands to develop four renewable natural gas projects that will help mitigate methane emissions.
BerQ RNG is recognized for its dedication to developing projects that benefit farmers, specializing in projects with biogas production volumes in the range of 350 to 1,000 Standard Cubic Feet per Minute (SCFM). Bright Renewables is widely recognized for its standardized technology, which leads to quick implementation and easy serviceability of existing upgrading facilities.
Clean Energy’s RNG Production Facility Breaks Ground at South Fork Dairy in Texas
Clean Energy Fuels announced it has broken ground on a renewable natural gas production facility at South Fork Dairy in Dimmitt, Texas. Home to a 16,000-cow herd, the facility will produce RNG, an ultra-clean transportation fuel that is made from organic waste and receives a negative carbon-intensity score.
The construction of the digesters and processing plant is forecasted to cost approximately $85 million and is expected to be completed in 2025. The South Fork Dairy facility is set to be one of the biggest RNG production developments in the country with an anticipated 2.6 million gallons of RNG to be produced annually once completed. All the RNG fuel produced at the site will make its way into Clean Energy’s nationwide network of stations.
Listen: Mingling Molecules: RNG Wins Market Share in Heavy-Duty Trucking
Renewable natural gas (RNG) has been one of the fastest low-carbon fuels to reach commerciality in the United States because of its ability to leverage traditional gas infrastructure. RNG has also benefited from recent innovation in compressed natural gas (CNG) engines used in heavy duty trucking.
S&P Global experts Tom DiChristopher and Greg Genette join EnergyCents hosts Hill Vaden and Sam Humphreys to discuss RNG’s success as a drop-in fuel and how technological innovation and supportive policy are helping to decarbonize commercial transportation.
Clean Energy: Accelerating A Cleaner Future
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has played a substantial role in pioneering the use of renewable natural gas (RNG) as a transportation fuel in the United States. To keep growing and moving forward, the company forges strong partnerships and maintains a flexible outlook.
As a distributor of RNG, Clean Energy helps fleets reach their sustainability goals and decarbonize their operations, working closely with engine manufacturers to help fleet customers—including UPS and Amazon—make the switch to RNG trucks, explains Clay Corbus, head of renewable fuels and senior vice president of strategic development with Clean Energy Fuels. “Our whole business has really been working with heavy-duty fleets that burn a lot of fuel and transitioning them from using diesel to using renewable natural gas,” he says.
RNG Coalition: Bridging Knowledge Gaps In Renewable Natural Gas
Changing someone’s mind is a difficult thing to do. Most people know what they know, and their long-held opinions are entrenched by life experiences, education, and popular culture. Add in the impact of social media, which serves as an echo chamber for our pre-existing beliefs, and it’s perhaps never been harder to convince people that what they know just isn’t so.
It is for this reason that direct engagement with the “other side” of a debate has never been more important. RNG Coalition’s communications staff recently sponsored and attended the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) annual conference in Philadelphia. The annual SEJ conference brings together climate journalists and environmental justice advocates from across the country — providing us with a chance to closely engage with folks who have diverse ideas about how best to decarbonize our society.
