Bio-CNG-Fueled Fleets in California Achieving Carbon-Free Footprint Today
The Transport Project (TTP) and Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) – with partner California Renewable Transportation Alliance – today announced that California fleets fueled with bio-CNG achieved carbon-negativity in their transportation operations last calendar year for the fourth straight year.
Renewable natural gas (RNG) accounted for 97% of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles in California in 2023. According to data from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) the annual average carbon intensity score of bio-CNG in that mix was -126.42 gCO2e/MJ.

Hydron Energy Inc., the cleaner fuel company that is commercializing the low-cost INTRUPTor system, a revolutionary gas upgrading solution, announced today their impressive performance results from their first field deployment.
The INTRUPTor system was developed at Hydron's North Vancouver facility and was completed in the fall of 2023 with the Balance of Plant built at Modern Niagara's Ontario facility. Field testing commenced at a farm in rural Ontario in February 2024 and the system has been operating continuously with stable performance.
Veolia, Waga Energy and Engie Join Forces To Contribute to the Development of the Renewable Natural Gas Industry in France
Since May 1, 2024, Waga Energy has been selling the Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) produced at Veolia's Val Pole in Claye-Souilly (north-central France), to ENGIE under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement (BPA), without recourse to the feed-in tariff subsidized by the French government. This 13-year contract is the longest BPA signed in France to date.

California’s Cap-and-Trade Program Funds $28 billion in Climate Investments in Last Decade
In just 10 years, California’s climate investments have wiped out emissions equivalent to taking 80% of the state’s gas cars off the road. That’s according to a new report released today by the state, which comes just ahead of national Infrastructure Week.
California has funded $28 billion in climate investments in the last 10 years, already delivering $11 billion to more than half a million projects that fight climate change and cut pollution. The remaining $17 billion will fund more projects in the coming years. The investments include a wide range of solutions such as putting affordable housing near job centers, building the nation’s first high-speed rail, and adding zero-emission transportation options in underserved communities.
Metallica’s European Tour Showcases Renewable-Energy Big Rigs—And Their Limits
The workhorses of Metallica’s tour will be 10 heavy-duty trucks powered by renewable natural gas—such as methane from landfills—and four heavy-duty trucks running on biodiesel or hydrogenated vegetable oil. The trucks, dramatically decked out in Metallica’s fierce logo, can travel about 1,000 miles between refueling.
Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer at truck maker Volvo Group, said it is important that high-profile performers like Metallica amplify the capabilities of sustainable fuels. Truckers will only adopt the technology when customers demand it, he said, so “This is music to my ears.”
Hawaiʻi Gas Sets Its Sights on New Renewable Energy Projects on Oʻahu
Hawaiʻi Gas has announced the selection of two projects from its 2023 request for proposals for renewable green hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG), key resources that will enable the company to shift away from its reliance on fossil fuel. Both projects will produce gas on Oʻahu and will enable Hawaiʻi Gas to increase hydrogen and RNG concentrations in its fuel mix.
The selection of these two projects represents forward movement on Hawaiʻi Gas’ path toward decarbonization, with a focus on diversification, energy resiliency, and maintaining affordability.
Verbio Celebrates Groundbreaking At South Bent Plant, Receives RFS Pathway Approval For Nevada Facility
Verbio on May 23 celebrated the groundbreaking of a conversion project at its ethanol plant in South Bend, Indiana, that will allow the facility to produce both ethanol and renewable natural gas (RNG) using an innovative production approach. A similar project is already underway at the company’s biorefinery in Nevada, Iowa.
The company received approval for the South Bend expansion project from the City of South Bend in April. Once the project is complete, the facility is expected to have the capacity to produce at least 85 MMgy of corn ethanol and 2.8 billion cubic feed of RNG annually.
WM Focuses on Dallas Region As Landfill Gas Hub With Opening of Latest RNG Plant
WM opened a renewable natural gas facility this week in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, a region that the company says is becoming an important hub for its long-term energy plans.
The nearly $55 million facility, built at WM’s landfill in Lewisville, is expected to generate about 1.2 million MMBtu per year of RNG from landfill gas. It’s the company’s second RNG location in the area after the Skyline site in Ferris, Texas.
