How Would ‘Clean Heat’ Standard Impact NJ’s Natural-Gas Utilities?

New Jersey is considering establishing a “clean heat” standard, a market-based tool to drive down greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels used by utility customers, primarily natural gas.

By the end of this decade, Gov. Phil Murphy wants to reduce carbon pollution from the natural-gas industry by 50% below 2006 levels, a target set by an executive order issued earlier this year.

Aemetis Closes USDA Financing To Fund Digesters at 8 More Dairies

Aemetis, a renewable natural gas and renewable fuels company focused on negative carbon intensity products, announced today the closing of its second $25 million, 20-year term loan guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a total of $50 million of Aemetis Biogas project financing arranged by Greater Commercial Lending (GCL) in the past nine months.

The Aemetis Biogas Central Dairy RNG Project is now fully funded to build biogas digesters and related assets for eight additional dairies using the $9.4 million of equity financing already provided by Aemetis and the $25 million of new debt financing guaranteed by the USDA. Magnolia Bank of Elizabethtown, Kentucky provided the primary funding for the $25 million loan to Aemetis Biogas 2 LLC (AB-2), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aemetis Inc.

From Waste to Wheels: Harnessing the Power of Biogas for Electric Vehicles

Biogas and electric vehicles (EVs) should be crossing paths, rather than crossing wires. Callum Russell, EV expert and owner of Charging at Home, looks at the crossover potential.

As global efforts continue to decarbonize and transition towards sustainable energy, the potential of biogas as a renewable source stands out. Meanwhile, EVs, another powerful tool for sustainable transition, are rapidly gaining traction. This article explores the promising intersection of these two technologies: using biogas as a power source for EVs.

Demand for Biomethane at ‘All-Time High’ As Firms Look To Decarbonize Fleets

Gasrec, which supplies gas to the road transport sector, has reported that demand for biomethane reached an all-time high for the company in June 2023.

It attributes this to the shift towards biogas and away from diesel as fleet operators attempt to decarbonize their fleets. Gasrec expects this trend to continue as orders of biogas-powered trucks are fulfilled and more of these vehicles hit the UK’s roads.

RNG Coalition: 300 RNG Facilities Now Operating in North America

The Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) is proud to announce a landmark sustainability achievement in the field of renewable energy: North America now has 300 operational renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities, up from just over 30 facilities in 2011 when RNG Coalition was founded. This extraordinary growth reflects the RNG industry’s steadfast commitment to mitigating climate change, fostering energy security, and ensuring a cleaner, greener future for present and future generations.

“The monumental increase in RNG facilities developed over the last decade-plus is reason to celebrate; unequivocally, RNG facilities are an imperative to mitigating methane and carbon in our advancement toward a more sustainable society and circular economy," RNG Coalition Founder and CEO Johannes Escudero said.

Waga Energy Partners With the Waste Commission of Scott County To Produce Renewable Natural Gas at the Scott Area Landfill in Davenport, Iowa

Waga Energy will fund construction of a renewable natural gas facility, using its patented WAGABOX technology, to upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG in Davenport, Iowa. Once commercial operations are achieved in 2025, the WAGABOX unit will be able to deliver over 200,000 MMBtu of RNG per year (60 GWh).

The facility will produce energy with an environmental benefit avoiding over 13,700 tons CO2eq. annually, equivalent to avoiding emissions from 1.4 million gallons of gasoline per year (based on the US EPA calculation methodology).

The Landfill Group Announces Commercial Operation of the First RNG Project in South Carolina

Enerdyne Power Systems, a Landfill Group Company based in Charlotte, commenced operation of a project collecting and upgrading landfill gas into pipeline quality renewable natural gas at the Twin Chimneys Landfill in Honea Path, South Carolina, on March 31, 2023. The Twin Chimneys Power Producers project is the first RNG project to reach commercial operations in South Carolina.

"We are excited to bring online this important project that is collecting methane that would otherwise be emitted at the landfill and converting it to clean, renewable fuel. RNG is an incredibly important source of low-carbon energy in the energy transition, and we're proud to establish the precedent of being the first operating project in the state of South Carolina," said Mike Fenton, Director of Sales and Project Delivery at The Landfill Group. "With a strong team from The Landfill Group companies and great support from our local government partners, we built a scalable project designed to provide an industry leading level of reliability," Fenton said.
