Consortium To Develop International Standard for Biogas and Biomethane
A new international consortium formed of global renewable energy certification leader Evident, M-RETS (USA), and Instituto Totum (Brazil) have finalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop new internationally accredited codes for biogas and biomethane, under the I-REC Standard.
The goal of the new I-REC(G) Product Code is to develop a standardised tracking system that is fact-based and versatile, a global standard with local implementation. This code would serve as the basis for a certification scheme for producing biogas and biomethane.
CHAR Technologies Signs MOU With First Nations Co-Op LNFMI for Waste to Energy Facility
CHAR Technologies has signed a memorandum of understanding with the First Nations co-operative Lake Nipigon Forest Management Inc. to jointly develop, build, own and operate a waste to energy facility in the Lake Nipigon Region of Northern Ontario. In particular, the plant will process wood waste and residues to RNG and biocarbon.
LNFMI is a forest management co-operative comprising four local First Nation Communities that hold the Sustainable Forest License (SFL) on the Lake Nipigon Forest. They are Animbiigoo Zaagi igan Anishinaabek; Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek; Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek; and, Red Rock Indian Band.
LNFMI oversees an annual harvest operation from the Lake Nipigon Forest, which supplies wood fiber across Northern Ontario. The Lake Nipigon Forest begins at the Nipigon township and extends east to Geraldton on Hwy 11 and Pays Plat on Hwy 17.
Opal Fuels Sees Heavy-Duty Trucking Bulking RNG Demand
Renewable natural gas (RNG) producer and distributor Opal Fuels Inc. is advancing production projects as “more and more fleets switch over and demand continues to build for RNG as transportation fuel,” co-CEO Adam Comora said during a first quarter update.
‘The World Needs To Embrace a Suite of Solutions’: Divert on Tackling Food Waste and Climate Change
With so many issues facing the world today, it’s a rare and exciting thing to find a solution to multiple problems at the same time. One such solution came at the hands of Divert CEO Ryan Begin, who founded the company in 2007 to tackle the twin issues of food waste and the urgent need for clean energy.
Divert takes a holistic overview of the food waste crisis, and they’re involved at every stage. Firstly, they prevent waste by developing technologies to keep food fresher for longer, and work with food retailers to rescue unsold edible food and donate it to food banks. Any waste that can’t be prevented is converted to clean power at one of Divert’s facilities, through a process called anaerobic digestion.
EnviTec Biogas: Building 15 Biogas and Gas Upgrading Plants in the USA
New York, Connecticut, Minnesota, Indiana and South Dakota - the list of US states where EnviTec Biogas is currently completing anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading projects is becoming longer and longer.
"We have 15 plants under construction right now," explains Lars von Lehmden, managing director of EnviTec Anlagenbau, which is based in Lohne and Saerbeck, Germany. Four of these plants are soon to go online.
The plants, all of which use manure from dairy cattle as input, will inject RNG into the existing natural gas infrastructure after commissioning.
"If there's no local connection to the natural gas grid, the gas will be trucked to the injection stations," von Lehmden explains. The customers are SJI Renewable Energy Ventures together with development partner REV LNG. REV acts as project developer for the combined biogas and EnviThan gas upgrading plants on behalf of its customer SJI.
BP Completes TravelCenters of America Purchase and Starts To Link Transition Opportunities
Bp has completed the acquisition of travel center operator TravelCenters of America as it looks to accelerate and integrate opportunities across the energy transition spectrum.
In a statement, bp said the 280-center acquisition, announced in February, brings growth opportunities for four of bp’s five transition growth engines including EV charging via bp pulse, convenience, biofuels/renewable natural gas (RNG) and, later, hydrogen.
Peoples Gas Announces Completion of Renewable Natural Gas Facility
TECO Peoples Gas, Florida’s largest natural gas distribution utility, celebrated the completion of construction of its renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at Alliance Dairies with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included several elected officials including Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson.
The Alliance RNG facility was built and will be owned and operated by Peoples Gas. Once fully operational in about a month, the facility is expected to produce 105,000 MMBtu of RNG, enough to serve about 4,400 homes annually. It will capture waste from approximately 6,500 cows and clean it to pipeline-quality natural gas that can be safely used by any natural gas appliance or other natural gas application.

Goodyear Greens the Carbon Black in Tires for Tesla Model 3
Goodyear is greening its latest ElectricDrive GT tire that’s available as aftermarket replacement rubber for the Tesla Model 3—with carbon black that doesn’t depend on the combustion of fossil fuels.
The new tires instead use carbon black from Monolith, made through methane pyrolysis and not requiring combustion, Goodyear says. Monolith’s methane pyrolysis process instead splits the methane molecule into carbon and hydrogen, using renewable electricity.
Vermont Clean Heat Bill Becomes Law As Legislature Overrides Governor’s Veto
Vermont’s Legislature struck down a veto from Republican Gov. Phil Scott, meaning a new law that will push people to stop using fossil fuels to heat their homes took effect Thursday.
Supporters say the Affordable Heat Act will lead to cleaner, cheaper ways to keep warm in the winter while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but critics warn it will drive up heating costs.
It establishes a clean heating standard, with utilities getting credits for energy efficient technologies — and having to pay if they don’t meet certain goals.
