EnviTec Biogas: Building 15 Biogas and Gas Upgrading Plants in the USA
New York, Connecticut, Minnesota, Indiana and South Dakota - the list of US states where EnviTec Biogas is currently completing anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading projects is becoming longer and longer.
"We have 15 plants under construction right now," explains Lars von Lehmden, managing director of EnviTec Anlagenbau, which is based in Lohne and Saerbeck, Germany. Four of these plants are soon to go online.
The plants, all of which use manure from dairy cattle as input, will inject RNG into the existing natural gas infrastructure after commissioning.
"If there's no local connection to the natural gas grid, the gas will be trucked to the injection stations," von Lehmden explains. The customers are SJI Renewable Energy Ventures together with development partner REV LNG. REV acts as project developer for the combined biogas and EnviThan gas upgrading plants on behalf of its customer SJI.
BP Completes TravelCenters of America Purchase and Starts To Link Transition Opportunities
Bp has completed the acquisition of travel center operator TravelCenters of America as it looks to accelerate and integrate opportunities across the energy transition spectrum.
In a statement, bp said the 280-center acquisition, announced in February, brings growth opportunities for four of bp’s five transition growth engines including EV charging via bp pulse, convenience, biofuels/renewable natural gas (RNG) and, later, hydrogen.
Peoples Gas Announces Completion of Renewable Natural Gas Facility
TECO Peoples Gas, Florida’s largest natural gas distribution utility, celebrated the completion of construction of its renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at Alliance Dairies with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included several elected officials including Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson.
The Alliance RNG facility was built and will be owned and operated by Peoples Gas. Once fully operational in about a month, the facility is expected to produce 105,000 MMBtu of RNG, enough to serve about 4,400 homes annually. It will capture waste from approximately 6,500 cows and clean it to pipeline-quality natural gas that can be safely used by any natural gas appliance or other natural gas application.
Anaergia Awarded ‘Net Zero Carbon Champion of the Year’ Accolade in Germany
Anaergia announced it has been named Net Zero Carbon Champion in the water industry’s most prestigious awards program, the Global Water Awards, which were held in Berlin, Germany, on May 9.
In addition, a wastewater project designed, built, and financed through Anaergia's’s subsidiary SoCal Biomethane, for Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority, was named Wastewater Project of the Year.
Goodyear Greens the Carbon Black in Tires for Tesla Model 3
Goodyear is greening its latest ElectricDrive GT tire that’s available as aftermarket replacement rubber for the Tesla Model 3—with carbon black that doesn’t depend on the combustion of fossil fuels.
The new tires instead use carbon black from Monolith, made through methane pyrolysis and not requiring combustion, Goodyear says. Monolith’s methane pyrolysis process instead splits the methane molecule into carbon and hydrogen, using renewable electricity.
Vermont Clean Heat Bill Becomes Law As Legislature Overrides Governor’s Veto
Vermont’s Legislature struck down a veto from Republican Gov. Phil Scott, meaning a new law that will push people to stop using fossil fuels to heat their homes took effect Thursday.
Supporters say the Affordable Heat Act will lead to cleaner, cheaper ways to keep warm in the winter while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but critics warn it will drive up heating costs.
It establishes a clean heating standard, with utilities getting credits for energy efficient technologies — and having to pay if they don’t meet certain goals.
‘RNG a Breakthrough Solution’ for Trucking, Says Clean Energy CEO As Supply, Stations Grow
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is continuing to advance renewable natural gas (RNG) supply with a “robust” pipeline of more than 20 production projects progressing, CEO Andrew Littlefair said during the first quarter update.
WM CEO Jim Fish Discusses the Economy, Labor Automation and Sustainability Investments
As the waste and recycling industry continues to evolve, its largest company — WM — remains a key barometer for the pace of innovation and economic activity in the sector.
Following the company’s recent Q1 earnings report, CEO Jim Fish was in the spotlight during multiple sessions at last week’s WasteExpo. During a keynote session, Fish said one of his top goals for the year ahead was to ensure that big spending plans for renewable natural gas projects at landfills and MRF expansions — described as “critically important for us” — are rolled out smoothly. He also discussed how certain investments in automation can reduce the company’s labor costs through attrition, including the example of how turnover for MRF jobs can be as high as 40-50%.
Dairy Digester Project Featured During EPA Visit
An Environmental Protection Agency Regional Director says anaerobic digesters are a solution for waste management and capturing farm emissions.
EPA Region 5 Administrator Debra Shore tells Brownfield the agency, along with USDA, is working to accelerate anaerobic digestion capacity to reduce methane emissions and divert food waste from landfills while generating a renewable energy source, “I think this model with an independent operator and manager so the farmer can focus on what they do best, may be the successful way that we can build out,” she says.
She visited Horning Farms outside of Ann Arbor Friday which will be working with Vanguard Renewables to use the farm’s manure along with food waste from southeast Michigan to create renewable natural gas.
Hitachi Zosen Inova Awarded Major Renewable Natural Gas Project by 3 Rivers Energy Partners
Hitachi Zosen Inova USA is pleased to announce it has been contracted to design, supply and install an integrated renewable natural gas (RNG) plant consisting of a 648,000 gal/day Wet Anaerobic Digester (AD), Amine Biogas Upgrader System (BGU), and integrated process piping and controls for 3 Rivers Energy Partners.
The 3 Rivers Energy Partners owned and operated facility will utilize new Wet AD technology that will use spent stillage as the feedstock allowing the plant to turn waste into energy. The AD system will power an adjacent distillery with RNG, providing 65% of its gas needs. Importantly, the RNG facility will help to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.
“When it came time to pick a partner to help us build one of the country’s largest renewable natural gas production and treatment facilities, we knew we needed a company with superior expertise and experience. Hitachi Zosen Inova was a clear choice for us,” said John Rivers, CEO of 3 Rivers Energy Partners.
