Biogas Could Account for 50% of All Gas Consumption in Australia by 2050: RGA

The Renewable Gas Alliance on May 1 welcomed the release of the RACE for 2030 report into the opportunity of anaerobic digestion for electricity, transport and gas.

This report highlighted the enormous potential of renewable gas, not only to help realize Australia’s climate ambitions and generate economic growth, but provide an ongoing and affordable low-emission energy source for consumers, Bioenergy Australia said in a press release May 1.

According to the report, biogas could account for more than 50 percent of all gas consumption in Australia by 2050, with the nation boasting enough feedstock to generate 371 PJ of biogas per year _ the equivalent of 6.2 per cent of Australia’s total energy consumption. This outcome would see a 28 percent reduction in Australia’s total emissions from natural gas use, help generate an additional $50 billion to Australia’s GDP, and create 18,100 full-time jobs.

Three Iowa Projects Would Be Part of Proposed Hydrogen Hub

Three Iowa energy projects — and their communities — stand to benefit from a proposed green hydrogen hub seeking $1 billion in federal money.

The Nebraska Public Power District, a publicly owned state utility, would take the lead in a collaboration among Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri, but five projects — two in Nebraska and three in Iowa — would "produce and consume clean hydrogen" as part of the Mid-Continent Clean Hydrogen Hub, or MCH2.

"MCH2 aims to bring over $4 billion in new economic development to the region through clean energy manufacturing while creating opportunities for skilled training and ensuring long-term, well-paying employment," according to a summary of the grant application submitted to the U.S. Department of Energy earlier this month.

Process Turns Cow Waste into Usable Gas

Seven-year-old James Hoare is the future of his family farm in England, and one of his jobs is shoveling the farm's future... in the form of cow poo in the barn.

"It's a form of liquid gold, isn't it?" said his mother Katie Hoare, who helps run the rented operation. "Because you can't do much without the slurry, it's an incredible form of fertilizer."

The "slurry," better known as liquid cow patties, is powering the farm. Once collected, the cow waste is pumped into a lagoon where the harmful methane is captured, instead of leaking into the atmosphere. Two tarps cover the lagoon, first collecting the raw methane released from the cow waste.  It's then processed and pumped under a second tarp for storage to produce gas.

Divert, Inc. Breaks Ground on Wasted Food to Renewable Energy Facility in Turlock, California

Divert, Inc. on April 26 announced groundbreaking on its integrated diversion and energy facility in Turlock, California, funded in part by a $63 million municipal green bond issued through the California Public Finance Authority (CalPFA). The new facility will capture and turn wasted food into carbon negative renewable energy, bringing California closer to reaching its net-zero carbon pollution goal by 2045.

"The wasted food crisis is a major contributor to climate change and food insecurity. States and municipalities are on the frontlines, under increasing pressure to ensure that their communities live in healthy, sustainable environments," said Ryan Begin, CEO and co-founder of Divert. "It is fitting that today’s announcement falls on April 26, global Stop Food Waste Day. For the past 16 years, Divert has been at the forefront of working to prevent waste through our sustainable infrastructure and advanced technologies. This is a transformative opportunity to scale Divert’s proven solutions in California and further accelerate our vision for a waste-free future."

Bioenergy Devco Secures Approval for Public-Private Partnership Negotiations to Construct Organic Recycling Facility in Middlesex County

Bioenergy Devco has been approved to negotiate a public-private partnership agreement to build an organics recycling facility by the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA).

The partnership between BDC and MCUA will see the development of a state-of-the-art facility that will recycle organic food waste from Middlesex County and central New Jersey creating renewable natural gas and organic soil amendments. This project is part of MCUA's commitment to environmental sustainability, as it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move the MCUA toward achieving its sustainability goals. The project will also create local jobs and stimulate economic growth in the area.

FortisBC Teams With Dicklands Farms To Produce RNG From Agricultural Waste

FortisBC Energy Inc. is adding more renewable natural gas (RNG) to its system by teaming with Dicklands Farms in Chilliwack, British Columbia (B.C.), who is producing RNG from agricultural and food waste. Once the project is at peak production, it is expected to produce enough low-carbon RNG to meet the annual gas needs of approximately 2,000 B.C. homes.

“With Dicklands Farms and the existing Fraser Valley Biogas project, the residents of the Fraser Valley can be proud of how much their community is helping advance a lower-carbon future in B.C.,” said Jenelle De La Cour, manager, Renewable Gas accounts with FortisBC. “The more RNG we have, the less conventional natural gas we need. Every RNG project is a win for climate action.”
