UGI Launches Joint Venture with Archaea Energy to Develop Renewable Natural Gas Project in Pennsylvania

UGI Energy Services, LLC (“UGIES”), a subsidiary of UGI Corporation (NYSE: UGI), and Archaea Energy Inc. (“Archaea”), a subsidiary of bp (NYSE: BP) announced today that they recently entered into a joint venture, Aurum Renewables, LLC (“Aurum”), to develop a renewable natural gas (“RNG”) project at the Commonwealth Environmental Systems landfill in Hegins, Pennsylvania. Archaea Holdings, LLC, a subsidiary of Archaea, holds a 60% ownership interest, and a subsidiary of UGIES holds a 40% ownership interest in the joint venture.

Under the joint venture, UGIES will contribute its existing 11 megawatt landfill gas-to-electricity facility. Through the joint venture, Aurum will develop a new RNG facility where the landfill gas will be processed to become RNG. Once complete, the project is expected to have the capacity to produce approximately 5,000 MMBtu per day of pipeline-quality RNG. Archaea, an industry-leading RNG company, will lead the development, engineering, construction, and operation of the new RNG facility, and UGIES will take a lead role in marketing the RNG produced by the facility.

PG&E Capturing Methane from CA Dairies as New Source for Natural Renewable Energy

"So in 2022, we interconnected our first four projects for renewable natural gas. So that was a huge milestone for us," said Christine Cowsert, senior vice president for Gas Engineering at PG&E.

The utility now has millions of cubic feet of renewable natural gas flowing through its pipelines, created from methane captured from manure at dairies in the Central Valley.

Europe Backs Measures for Future RNG and Hydrogen

Members of the European Parliament on Thursday backed measures that would support the adoption of renewable natural gas and hydrogen into the grid as part of a bloc-wide effort to rely less on fossil fuels.

 Members of Parliament said Thursday that a new mechanism is necessary to ensure consumers can choose between fossil fuels or low-carbon alternatives.

Former CDFA and USDA Secretary Ann Veneman, Stanislaus County Supervisor Vito Chiesa, and other dignitaries joined the tour and discussion of the company's vision and leadership regarding the creation of a Circular Bioeconomy in California's Central Valley that couples the production of low or below zero carbon intensity (CI) renewable fuels with the region's abundant agricultural waste and by-products.

Goldman Sachs to Invest Over $1 Bln in Europe Biomethane Venture

Goldman Sachs Asset Management said on Monday it had launched a biomethane business called Verdalia Bioenergy and aimed to invest more than 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in Europe over the next four years.

Biomethane, a lower carbon alternative to fossil-based natural gas, is produced from the decomposition of organic waste and is seen as a key plank in efforts to lower carbon emissions in the European Union.

Volvo Launches Powerful Biogas Truck for Lowering CO2 on Longer Transports

Volvo Trucks is now launching a new, stronger gas-powered truck that can run on liquified biogas. The new truck can carry out demanding, long distance transport tasks, while reducing overall CO2 emissions.

 Five years ago, Volvo Trucks launched its trucks that can run on liquified biogas, often called bio-LNG, which is a renewable fuel that can be produced from many types of organic waste, including food scraps. The fuel can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100%.
