OPAL Fuels Announces Florida’s First Landfill Gas to Renewable Natural Gas Facility Is Fully Operational

OPAL Fuels Inc. announced Florida’s first landfill gas to RNG facility at the New River Solid Waste Association municipal solid waste landfill has successfully completed its ramp-up period.

Located in Raiford, Florida, the facility captures naturally occurring biogas from the decomposition of organic material at the landfill and refines it into RNG, a usable low-carbon fuel. RNG is a right now solution to the right now problem of climate change and is one of the most attractive sources of renewable energy – capturing extremely damaging greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and using it to replace fossil fuels, such as diesel.

bp Completes Acquisition of Archaea Energy

At the end of December 2022 bp announced it had completed its purchase of Archaea Energy, a leading provider of renewable natural gas (RNG). The oil giant said this marked a milestone in the growth of bp’s strategic bioenergy business.

“We see enormous opportunity to grow our bioenergy business by bringing Archaea fully into bp,” said Dave Lawler, chairman and president bp America. “The talent, expertise and passion of their team has let them achieve incredible growth so far, and we're excited to support the next chapter in line with our strategy.”

Sioux Center Approves RNG Project

A new natural gas line connecting Sioux Center to a source of locally-produced natural gas could start next year.

The Sioux Center City Council at its Dec. 21 meeting approved giving city utilities manager Murray Hulstein authority to sign the agreement between West Branch RNG and the city of Sioux Center when the agreement is officially complete. The city council spent about a half hour of its meeting reviewing the agreement with assistant utilities manager Adam Fedders, who noted a few words need to be tweaked yet before the agreement can officially be signed.

UGI Corporation announces $150m RNG expansion in South Dakota

UGI Corporation announced on 4 January that MBL Bioenergy has entered an agreement to develop its second and third clusters of dairy manure waste to renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in South Dakota, US.

In total, these additional projects are said to represent approximately $150 million (€141m) of investment by MBL Bioenergy, and 100% of the funds will be provided by UGI Energy Services - a UGI subsidiary.

BayoTech Partners with Ranken Technical College to Bring Low-Cost, Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production to Missouri

BayoTech, Inc. announces the expansion of their hydrogen distribution network into the St. Louis, Missouri region. The BayoTech-owned BayoGaaS™ Hydrogen Hub will be located onsite at Ranken and will produce 350 tons per year of low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen for local users. The Hydrogen Hub will create 10 local clean energy full-time jobs.

Yesterday, BayoTech and Ranken hosted a groundbreaking event that invited members of the public, Ranken College leadership and students, elected leadership, and community leaders to ceremoniously break ground on the BayoGaaS™ Hydrogen Hub, which will further advance hydrogen production, consumption and training in the state of Missouri.

Green Rock Energy Partners Acquires Pennsylvania Renewable Natural Gas Production Facility

The South Hills deal adds to Green Rock’s growing portfolio in the renewable energy space and is consistent with the firm’s primary investment focus on energy-producing waste-to-value assets.

 Located in South Park Township, Pennsylvania, South Hills upgrades landfill biogas to produce RNG that will be sold in the vehicular transportation market as renewable compressed natural gas. Production at the facility is expected to exceed one million gallons of renewable fuel per year. Green Rock has partnered with United Green Energy, and others, to manage the renewable natural gas offtake.

Vision RNG and Waste Connections Sign Agreement for LFG to RNG Project at the Laurel Ridge Landfill

Vision RNG, LLC today announced a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) agreement with the Laurel Ridge Landfill in Corbin, Kentucky. Owned by Laurel Ridge Landfill, LLC, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, Inc, the project will use 1,800 cfm of landfill gas (LFG) and construction is scheduled to be completed in Q4 of 2024. The project will produce 450,000 MMBtu of RNG annually that will be injected into a nearby natural gas transmission pipeline. This RNG will be used by various customers across the U.S. for transportation fuel and other sustainability purposes.

Vision RNG’s CEO, Bill Johnson commented, “We are delighted to be partnered with Waste Connections on this project. As our portfolio of RNG projects continues to expand, we are making a real impact on reducing methane emissions, capturing that wasted greenhouse gas and putting it to good use as renewable natural gas.”

Canada Invests €10.6m in Biomass-Fueled RNG Facility

The governments of Ontario and Canada are investing more than $11.3 million (€10.6m) to expand CHAR Technologies’ facility in Thorold to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) and biocarbon – creating the largest facility of its kind in Canada. It will be the only RNG facility in the country to exclusively use woody biomass. Expanding CHAR’s Thorold facility will create close to 40 new direct and indirect jobs, as well as 20 construction jobs.

“This new facility will produce clean alternative fuels and increase sustainability in the forest sector through new and emerging uses of renewable forest biomass,” said Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “Our investment in CHAR Technologies is an investment in Ontario, which will boost productivity, create jobs and support a thriving forest economy that communities throughout the province depend on.”

New use Considered for Methane from Watford-Area Landfill

Mayor Todd Case attended a recent public meeting organized by an Enbridge-hired consultant to prepare an environmental study for a pipeline that could be built to carry renewable natural gas from Twin Creeks, the large Waste Management-operated landfill in the township near Watford.

“Any time you can use that methane gas, which is byproduct of that very large landfill, that’s a good thing. That’s a positive thing instead of flaring it off into the atmosphere,” Case said.
