Biomethane from Garbage: Turning a Climate Enemy into Clean Energy - VIDEO

Garbage that has accumulated since 1991 in the two landfills in the municipality of Caucaia has become a biomethane deposit that supplies industrial and commercial companies, thermoelectric plants and homes in Ceará, a state in northeastern Brazil.

The GNR Fortaleza plant extracts biogas from 700 wells installed in the landfills and refines it to obtain what it calls renewable natural gas - which gives the company its name - as opposed to fossil natural gas.

Chevron, CalBio Expand Partnership on Dairy Biomethane Fuel Projects

Chevron U.S.A. Inc., a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, and California Bioenergy LLC (CalBio) announced a joint investment in their second holding company to produce and market dairy biomethane as a renewable natural gas (RNG) transportation fuel in California. At signing, the holding company, CalBioGas Hilmar LLC, secured initial funding from Chevron to build infrastructure for dairy biomethane projects in California’s Merced County.

Manure storage on dairy farms results in the release of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. CalBio brings technology and operational experience to help dairy farmers build digesters and methane capture projects to convert this methane to a beneficial use as renewable natural gas, which is considered carbon negative on a lifecycle basis under California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Per the agreement, Chevron will provide additional funding for as many as seven digesters and one central upgrading facility across a cluster of dairy farms in Merced County.

European Commission and Industry Leaders Launch Biomethane Industrial Partnership

The European Commission and industry leaders that are committed to the green energy transition launched the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) on 28 September. This new public-private partnership  was announced in the REPowerEU Plan and it aims to support the achievement of the target to increase annual production and use of biomethane to 35 billion cubic metres by 2030. This will reduce Europe’s dependency on natural gas from Russia in a cost-effective way. At the same time, it will substantially contribute to an integrated net-zero energy system, diversifying farmer’s incomes and ensuring a circular approach.

FedDev Ontario Invests $1,500,000 in CHAR Technologies Thorold Phase 1 Project

CHAR Technologies Ltd. is pleased to announce an investment of $1,500,000 from the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), to support the Company’s Thorold Renewable Natural Gas & Biocarbon Project (“Thorold Phase 1 Project”).

This investment, in the form of an interest-free repayable contribution toward certain eligible project costs, is provided through FedDev Ontario’s Jobs and Growth Fund (JGF). The Thorold Phase 1 Project will see CHAR relocate and recommission their existing London facility to the Thorold Multimodal Hub where it will contribute to a lower carbon economy by providing direct drop-in solutions to replace the consumption of fossil fuels. Once fully operational, the project is anticipated to simultaneously produce renewable natural gas (“RNG”) and biocarbons, converted from clean woody feedstocks that would otherwise be destined for landfills.

Republic Services and Archaea Energy Announce Renewable Natural Gas Project at Middle Point Landfill

Republic Services, a leader in the environmental services industry, and Archaea Energy, the industry-leading renewable natural gas (RNG) producer in the U.S., today announced plans for an RNG facility at Middle Point Landfill to be developed through the companies' Lightning Renewables, LLC joint venture.  The project will convert the gas that naturally occurs as the waste in place at Middle Point Landfill decomposes into pipeline-quality RNG that can be used as a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels.

After hearing from Rutherford County officials about their ongoing interest in a local renewable energy project, the Republic-Archaea partnership will help make that idea a reality. "At Republic Services, we're putting sustainability in action through partnerships and projects like this one at Middle Point Landfill," said Jamey Amick, Area President of Republic Services. "Combined with significant investments we have made in the landfill gas system to control the potential for off-site odor, this project will further propel gas collection at the site. We know how important sustainability is to this community, and we are delighted to bring this innovative solution to Rutherford County and middle Tennessee."

$80 Million Grant Aims to Make Regenerative Farming Practice a Moneymaker for Farmers

Keeping plants continuously growing on farmland through the winter protects and enriches the soil, improves water quality, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why Lisa Schulte Moore, a natural resource ecology and management professor at Iowa State University, is working to make the year-round covered ground a conventional practice.

“My vision is that when we drive around Iowa in December, we don’t see a single bare field,” she said.

While the use of cover crops is growing, it’s far from common. A new grant of up to $80 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will fund a project meant to spur more farmers to plant cover crops and perennial prairie grass through both direct payments and a demonstration of how harvested winter-hearty crops and grass can be processed into renewable natural gas.
