European Commission and Industry Leaders Launch Biomethane Industrial Partnership

The European Commission and industry leaders that are committed to the green energy transition launched the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) on 28 September. This new public-private partnership  was announced in the REPowerEU Plan and it aims to support the achievement of the target to increase annual production and use of biomethane to 35 billion cubic metres by 2030. This will reduce Europe’s dependency on natural gas from Russia in a cost-effective way. At the same time, it will substantially contribute to an integrated net-zero energy system, diversifying farmer’s incomes and ensuring a circular approach.

FedDev Ontario Invests $1,500,000 in CHAR Technologies Thorold Phase 1 Project

CHAR Technologies Ltd. is pleased to announce an investment of $1,500,000 from the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), to support the Company’s Thorold Renewable Natural Gas & Biocarbon Project (“Thorold Phase 1 Project”).

This investment, in the form of an interest-free repayable contribution toward certain eligible project costs, is provided through FedDev Ontario’s Jobs and Growth Fund (JGF). The Thorold Phase 1 Project will see CHAR relocate and recommission their existing London facility to the Thorold Multimodal Hub where it will contribute to a lower carbon economy by providing direct drop-in solutions to replace the consumption of fossil fuels. Once fully operational, the project is anticipated to simultaneously produce renewable natural gas (“RNG”) and biocarbons, converted from clean woody feedstocks that would otherwise be destined for landfills.

Republic Services and Archaea Energy Announce Renewable Natural Gas Project at Middle Point Landfill

Republic Services, a leader in the environmental services industry, and Archaea Energy, the industry-leading renewable natural gas (RNG) producer in the U.S., today announced plans for an RNG facility at Middle Point Landfill to be developed through the companies' Lightning Renewables, LLC joint venture.  The project will convert the gas that naturally occurs as the waste in place at Middle Point Landfill decomposes into pipeline-quality RNG that can be used as a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels.

After hearing from Rutherford County officials about their ongoing interest in a local renewable energy project, the Republic-Archaea partnership will help make that idea a reality. "At Republic Services, we're putting sustainability in action through partnerships and projects like this one at Middle Point Landfill," said Jamey Amick, Area President of Republic Services. "Combined with significant investments we have made in the landfill gas system to control the potential for off-site odor, this project will further propel gas collection at the site. We know how important sustainability is to this community, and we are delighted to bring this innovative solution to Rutherford County and middle Tennessee."

$80 Million Grant Aims to Make Regenerative Farming Practice a Moneymaker for Farmers

Keeping plants continuously growing on farmland through the winter protects and enriches the soil, improves water quality, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why Lisa Schulte Moore, a natural resource ecology and management professor at Iowa State University, is working to make the year-round covered ground a conventional practice.

“My vision is that when we drive around Iowa in December, we don’t see a single bare field,” she said.

While the use of cover crops is growing, it’s far from common. A new grant of up to $80 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will fund a project meant to spur more farmers to plant cover crops and perennial prairie grass through both direct payments and a demonstration of how harvested winter-hearty crops and grass can be processed into renewable natural gas.

Op-Ed: Let Facts Drive Energy Policy for New York

Last week my colleagues and I participated in a series of public hearings concerning proposed enhancement to our Greenpoint Energy Center. The project involves the installation of two new vaporizer units that would allow us to extract liquified natural gas (LNG) from existing tanks within our facility more efficiently on the coldest days of the year, during peak hours when gas is most needed by customers. This is proven technology that we have operated safely for decades. The public meetings are part of yet another independent review of our plans for addressing forecasted gas supply gaps in the region. Our long-term supply plans have previously undergone review by regulators and independent consultants, each finding that the supply gap is very real and that our approach is reasonable and necessary to avoid future restrictions on essential energy services. Over the four sessions, we heard from members of the community and advocates who expressed strong support for renewable alternatives and understandable concern for their rising energy bills. We also heard a lot of misinformation about National Grid and our motives for pursuing this project.

Vermont-based Farmers Host Large AD Operation, Supplying Neighboring College With Renewable Natural Gas

A Vermont farm, neighboring college, and utility are partnering with Vanguard Renewables on a project that has capacity to convert about 180 tons of food and beverage waste and 100 tons of manure into renewable natural gas (RNG) each day.

The anaerobic digestion (AD) operation, reportedly the largest in New England, comes with advantages unique to each party’s interests, while giving Vermont food producers an outlet for mega volumes of scraps. For facility host and Goodrich Family Farm co-owners Danielle Goodrich-Gingras and her brother Chase Goodrich, a large impetus was a better, more environmental way to manage the massive tons of manure their cows produce.

Amoozon? Cows to Help Fuel Central Ohio Amazon Deliveries

Clean Energy Fuels Corporation cut the ribbon on its new renewable natural gas fueling (RNG) station in Groveport, Ohio, for Amazon’s Groveport truck fleet. "This station is the first renewable natural gas fueling station for Amazon that’s been built from the ground up," CEO of Clean Energy Fuels, Andrew Littlefair, said.

Evan Barton and his family run South Fork Dairy in Newark, which will work with Clean Energy Fuels. "The benefit is we're eliminating the methane going into the environment from our manure pits," Barton said. But at the same time, we’re displacing diesel fuel that’s going to be powering these trucks. From an environmental standpoint, we’re winning on both sides.”

EnviTec Biogas: Part of European Commission's Biomethane Industrial Partnership

The European Commission and leading companies from across Europe are jointly launching the sustainable Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP). The aim is to meet the EU's biomethane production target of 35 billion cubic metres (bcm) by 2030.

Announced as part of the REPower EU plan, the project is now officially underway. One key goal of the initiative is achieving a cost-effective reduction in Europe's dependency on Russian natural gas. However, the BIP also aims to make significant progress in diversifying agriculture revenue streams and orienting the sector towards a circular economy.
