Biogas Key to Addressing Energy & Climate Crisis, Says UK Anaerobic Digestion Trade Body
Former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and now Chairman of the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), Chris Huhne, wrote to Prime Minister Liz Truss, Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, Environment Secretary Ranil Jayawardena and Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
The ADBA says it could take less than two years to build an AD plant and in addition to reducing the UK’s dependence on gas imports, the rapid growth of the industry could help reduce UK annual greenhouse gas emissions by 6%.
CIM Group Expands Investment in Renewable Natural Gas with Acquisition of Mas Energy’s RNG Development Platform
CIM Group announced that it has acquired 100% of the Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) development platform of MAS CanAm, LLC, an affiliate of MAS Energy, LLC , a developer, owner and operator of landfill gas-based RNG in the U.S. and Canada, including a portfolio of seven projects currently under construction or in development. As part of the transaction, the platform will be renamed Terreva Renewables.
Terreva is expected to produce RNG by year-end 2022 and will be a significant participant in the North American RNG sector, with the initial portfolio expecting to produce more than 3.9 million mmbtu of RNG per annum. CIM Group plans to meaningfully grow the Terreva Renewables platform in North America.
British Columbia: CRD Replacing Gas-to-Electricity Plant at Hartland Landfill with New Facility
A new energy plant that converts landfill gas into renewable natural gas is coming to the Hartland Landfill in British Columbia, the Capital Regional District announced. The new RNG facility will be built by Waga Energy.
The RNG facility will take gas generated by organic waste in the landfill and convert it into renewable natural gas, which is a "carbon-neutral energy," according to the CRD. The upgraded biogas will then be sold to FortisBC to be mixed and used with its existing natural gas distribution system. The CRD says the new facility will reduce the region's greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 450,000 tonnes over the next 25 years.
Anew Offers First Green-e Renewable Fuels Certified Retail Product
Center for Resource Solutions announced that Anew, a marketer and originator of sustainable solutions, has achieved the first-ever Green-e Renewable Fuels certification for its new Anew-RFC product.
The Renewable Fuel Certificates (RFCs) used in Anew-RFC are sourced from biomethane (also known as renewable natural gas, or RNG) projects that prevent the harmful emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Anew-RFC provides a solution for commercial and industrial customers seeking access to fuels with lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than the fossil fuels they displace.
The Overlooked Potential of Biologically Derived Renewable Hydrogen
Developing cost- and climate-effective hydrogen resources has been at the forefront of many recent conversations surrounding decarbonization of everything from existing thermal loads to transportation and power applications. Most of this conversation has revolved around hydrogen made from natural gas or clean electricity, including their respective color monikers, as society debates which resources constitute a viable climate strategy.
Often overlooked is the potential to create renewable hydrogen (RH2) from biological resources such as biogas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and other waste biomass resources. In fact, these production pathways hold the greatest potential for both reducing carbon emissions and facilitating cross-sectoral environmental benefits on a per-energy-unit basis.
Dominion Energy Launches New Program to Help Reduce Customers Carbon Footprint
Dominion Energy's residential and commercial natural gas customers in North Carolina can now sign up for GreenTherm, a new and affordable way customers can reduce their carbon footprint and support renewable natural gas projects.
The voluntary program will allow customers to offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home by supporting projects, including several in North Carolina, that reduce emissions.
Researchers Envision an Extreme Circular Economy
In my upcoming book, “Flush: The Remarkable Science of an Unlikely Treasure,” I describe how the misunderstood byproduct of our daily living is a vastly undervalued natural resource.
Waste has power: as medicine, fertilizer, biomethane gas and reclaimed water, among other proven applications. But that’s just scratching the surface of our excremental potential; its biological, chemical and physical attributes have inspired even more wide-ranging and forward-looking brainstorming about what else we can create from our waste.
UGI Announces Investment in a New Renewable Natural Gas Project in Upstate New York
UGI Corporation announced that Cayuga RNG has entered into an agreement to develop its fourth project to produce renewable natural gas in upstate New York. Cayuga RNG is a joint venture of UGI Energy Services, LLC, a subsidiary of UGI, and Global Common Ventures, LLC.
Cayuga RNG’s fourth project will be constructed at Bergen Farms and Glenview Dairy, both located in Schuyler County in upstate New York. The project will include the construction of a manure digester and gas upgrading equipment at each location. Once completed in the second half of calendar year 2024, the project is expected to produce approximately 150 million cubic feet of RNG annually that will be delivered to a local natural gas pipeline serving the regional distribution system. UGIES’ subsidiary, GHI Energy, will be the exclusive marketer for Cayuga RNG.
Farmers Have ‘Obvious Solution’ to Energy Crisis
With the energy crisis showing no sign of easing and is likely only to worsen in the coming years and decades, questions are being asked as to why the government is ignoring a possible miracle solution right here on our own doorstep.
As recently reported by the Herald, local glass manufacturing giant Encirc is currently on a mission to transform its operations into the greenest in the industry, and as part of that drive the factory is hoping to employ the use of biomethane.
Montauk Renewables, Inc. Announces Second Apex RNG Facility in Ohio
Montauk Renewables, Inc. announced the planned construction of a second renewable natural gas (RNG) processing facility at its Apex landfill gas project in Amsterdam, Ohio.
The planned project is being driven by projections in biogas feedstock availability from the host landfill over the next 12 to 18 months. The company is targeting an approximate 40% increase in RNG processing capacity with the addition of the second facility. It is expected to add up to 2,100 MMBtu per day production capacity and expand the infrastructure for the conversion of LFG to RNG. The project is expected to be completed in 2024, based on currently forecasted biogas feedstock volumes that are anticipated to be available from the host landfill at the time of commissioning.
