With Methane a Climate Worry, North Carolina Landfill Captures Gas for Energy

The 550-acre Speedway Landfill is a mountain of decomposing food, plastic and other trash in Concord, North Carolina. It's right off U.S. 29 next to Charlotte Motor Speedway and rises more than 100 feet above the surrounding area. And it grows daily with deliveries by trucks from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and surrounding counties.

"Every day we have hundreds of trucks run in here, whether it's Republic Services trucks, third-party trucks, city of Charlotte, and they run in to dispose of their waste," said Tim Ginn, who manages the landfill for its owner, Republic Services, the nation's second-largest trash hauler.

How the Dairy Industry is Fighting Climate Change

As National Dairy Month comes to a close, we want to honor the dairy farmers and cows that provide the milk that feeds the nation — and look at how dairy farming has evolved to reduce the industry’s climate impacts.

In 2021, Hoard's Dairyman reported that “95 percent of dairy farms, no matter the size are family owned, and 87 percent of all dairy cattle in the US call these family farms home.” These family farms are largely multi-generational operations and are some of the earliest adopters of regenerative agriculture practices that are key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and sustaining the land and natural resources for the future.

RNG: The Abundant Asset

Energy is the lifeblood of a healthy society, and a healthy society is one that is sustainable. More and more organizations are recognizing the need to create diversified energy portfolios that balance environmental, economic, and social needs while providing energy reliability and security.

With its low- to negative-carbon intensity score, easy deployment into existing infrastructure, and comparative cost against today’s soaring fossil fuel prices, renewable natural gas (RNG) is a vital part of this diverse energy mix. And guess what? It’s available now.

Enchanted Rock Dual-Purpose Microgrids Become First Reciprocating Engine to Secure Strictest Emissions Certification in the Nation

Enchanted Rock announced that it has attained the California Air Resources Board Distributed Generation (CARB DG) certification. Enchanted Rock's Dual-Purpose Microgrids ensure operational continuity for companies, critical infrastructure, and communities during unexpected power outages and provide grid stability services.

To achieve CARB DG certification, manufacturers of electrical generation technologies must certify their technologies to specific criteria pollutant emission standards. Although most CARB DG certified technologies are microturbines and fuel cells, Enchanted Rock's generator technology underwent rigorous testing to become the first engine of its kind to have emissions low enough to meet the necessary standards.

Canada and British Columbia Support Improvements in Public Transit Across the Province

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, and the Honourable Rob Fleming, British Columbia's Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, announced more than $31.2 million in joint federal-provincial funding for improvements in public transit across British Columbia.

Several communities, including Central Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kelowna, and Victoria, will benefit from more than 100 light and heavy-duty buses that will replace older buses and expand the current fleet to serve more commuters. The 20 heavy-duty buses will feature renewable natural gas, while select buses will be fitted with hybrid electric drive systems to reduce fuel and gas emissions by up to 20 percent.

Vanguard Renewables’ Neil Smith Discusses Expansion Plans

The global anaerobic digestion (AD) market is projected to reach $15.28 billion by 2025, and North America is dominating in this space. Driving the trend are policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, growing demand for renewable energy, and federal and some state incentives to invest in renewable natural gas (RNG) sourced from methane.

Vanguard Renewables is among enterprises tapping into that market. With 10 anaerobic digesters in operation, the company anticipates huge growth in the next few years, with contracts at over 120 farms—projects that are on track to be completed by 2026, says Vanguard Renewables CEO Neil Smith.

U.S. Gain Partners with Utility to Expand Focus on Renewable Energy

U.S. Gain will supply renewable natural gas (RNG) to a large Midwest utility, supporting their greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. RNG provides a sustainable choice for residential and small business customers, contributing to a cleaner future through use of renewable energy.

The partnership allows the utility to increase their commitment to renewable energy and efforts to cut carbon emissions. RNG plays an important role in this transition and will be utilized to reach a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This utility’s customers are involved in the journey to net zero as well through energy efficiency programs and voluntary RNG and carbon offset investments. As new technologies, such as hydrogen and carbon capture become market-ready, they will provide additional renewable energy solutions to their customers.

BerQ RNG Marks Successful Startup of Michigan Dairy Renewable Natural Gas Facility

BerQ RNG announced the successful start-up of an animal manure anaerobic digester-to-RNG facility located on a dairy farm in Western Michigan. Pipeline-quality RNG has been produced and commercial operations were achieved on June 24.

The facility is expected to deliver over 85,000 MMBtu of RNG annually, equating to approximately 750,000 gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE) of renewable vehicle fuel annually. This RNG will be used as clean fuel for the transportation sector and stands to benefit from the federal Renewable Fuel Standard Program and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard in California. The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by over 6,000 metric tons annually and significantly reduce air pollutants.

Biofuel, Ag Groups Comment on SEC Climate Disclosures Rulemaking

Growth Energy, the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, the National Corn Growers Association, and American Soybean Association are among the ag and biofuel groups that have weighed in on a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposed rule that focuses on climate-related disclosures.

According to the SEC, the proposed rule would require registrants to include certain climate-related disclosures in their registration statements and periodic reports, including information about climate-related risks that are reasonably likely to have a material impact on their business, results of operations, or financial condition, and certain climate-related financial statement metrics in a note to their audited financial statements.
