Although dairy is a dietary staple in many American households, it can be hard on the environment due to the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) produced from dairy farms. To address this, Black & Veatch has partnered with Amp Americas to develop an engineering, procurement and construction project that turns cow manure into renewable natural gas (RNG).
“We chose Black & Veatch as our EPC partner for the Lafayette County facility because their experience in developing decarbonization solutions for industrial facilities aligns perfectly with our sustainable vision,” said Martin Gilkes, chief operating officer at Amp Americas. “Their expertise directly supports our efforts to harvest energy from waste materials, accelerating the global transition to renewable fuels.”
Aemetis Signs Six-Year Agreement with Trillium to Supply Dairy Renewable Natural Gas
Aemetis, Inc., a renewable fuels company focused on negative carbon intensity products, announced that its Aemetis Biogas Services subsidiary has signed a six-year supply agreement with Trillium to provide an estimated 600,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) to be used as transportation fuel in California. The RNG replaces up to the equivalent of 4.3 million gallons of diesel fuel, primarily used in heavy duty passenger and cargo vehicles.
“Trillium’s mission is to help customers meet their ESG goals, and providing RNG is a big part of that,” said Ryan Erickson, vice president of Trillium. “We’re excited to partner with Aemetis to use biogas to get drivers back on the road quickly and safely.”
New Process to Create Renewable Natural Gas for the Roanoke Valley
A byproduct of the Roanoke Valley’s wastewater will soon be put to use as a renewable form of natural gas, the first such endeavor of its kind in the state.
The project will entail the installation of a large piece of equipment at the Western Virginia Water Authority’s treatment plant, which will convert biogas that comes from the processing of sewage into natural gas that will be purchased by Roanoke Gas Co. and then sold to its customers. Roanoke Gas estimates that the new fuel supply will be enough to heat about 500 homes on a cold winter day.
Ben & Jerry's Commits to Lowering Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Ben & Jerry’s is committing to cutting greenhouse gas emissions to half of the industry standard by 2024 on 15 dairy farms it works with across the state and the Netherlands. That includes putting the cows on a high-quality forage diet and using methane-reducing technology on the manure.
Methane is released with every cow belch and feces, which is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Vermont Gas Systems has been working this type of technology for years. With the use of a pipeline system, they’re able to convert methane into renewable natural gas.
United Green Energy and Green Rock Energy Partners Announce Partnership on Renewable Natural Gas Opportunities
United Green Energy (“UGE”), through its affiliate United Energy Trading LLC (“UET”), has formed a strategic partnership with Green Rock Energy Partners, a sustainable infrastructure-focused private equity firm, to co-develop renewable natural gas opportunities. UGE has made an investment in Green Rock’s first project, Bio Town Biogas, while also providing commodity marketing and logistic services to the Project.
Bio Town Biogas, which closed in Q3 2021, sources food waste, dairy manure, beef manure, and other agriculture waste to produce renewable electricity, renewable heat, and renewable natural gas. The Project is UGE’s first equity investment in a series of similar renewable natural gas projects involving Green Rock. UGE brings to Green Rock value-added renewable energy services and products.
CEO Timothy Cawley Tells Shareholders Con Edison is Creating a Clean Energy Future
Con Edison Chairman and CEO Timothy Cawley told shareholders in the company's virtual annual meeting that the company is accelerating its work to create a clean energy future that benefits everyone in the region, including historically disadvantaged communities.
Cawley called the company's Clean Energy Commitment Con Edison's roadmap for the future and reiterated the company's plan to deliver 100-percent emissions-free energy by 2040.
StormFisher and Modern Niagara’s Carbon Reduction Solution
StormFisher and Modern Niagara have partnered to utilise renewable natural gas (RNG) as a carbon reduction solution for building infrastructure across Canada. The agreement allows Modern Niagara to acquire RNG from StormFisher's Ontario-based anaerobic digestion facility which produces biogas from food waste.
Instead of arriving at landfills, food waste obtained by StormFisher undergoes a process that creates RNG. The newly created RNG is then captured, cleaned and injected into the existing natural gas network to be used for the same applications as conventional natural gas.
UGI Commits Funding for Largest Renewable Natural Gas Project to Date
UGI Energy Services, LLC, a subsidiary of UGI Corporation, announced an agreement with MBL Bioenergy to fully fund the first set of renewable natural gas (“RNG”) projects currently under development in South Dakota. In total, the project will represent over $70 million of investment by MBL Bioenergy, of which 100% of the funds will be provided by UGIES. MBL Bioenergy is a joint venture partnership between UGIES, Sevana Bioenergy and a subsidiary of California Bioenergy (“CalBio”) with the sole purpose of developing RNG projects in South Dakota.
The first set of projects, known as a cluster, will be built at three farms located north of Sioux Falls, SD, and is expected to generate approximately 300 million cubic feet of RNG annually once completed in calendar year 2024.

American Power Group's V6000 Dual Fuel Demo Truck Test Yields 60% Diesel Displacement Rate, Net Fuel Savings of 25% to 30%
American Power Group Corporation ("APG") announced the results from a month-long test drive of APG's V6000 Dual Fuel system by Sapphire Gas Solution, a Texas based industry leader in mobile RNG, LNG, and CNG services across the U.S. Sapphire has been using APGI's 2015 Freightliner CC132 Coronado Sleeper with a Detroit Diesel 505HP diesel engine upfitted with APG's new V6000 Dual Fuel system to pull heavy-haul LNG tankers with a combined truck/tanker load approximating 80,000 pounds across Texas.
Sam Thigpen, CEO of Sapphire Gas commented, "Our drivers reported the truck ‘performed like a diesel engine with no difference in power or torque’ while operating APG's Dual Fuel system and their new natural gas telematics system allowed us to validate a consistent on-road displacement rate of near 60% with an overall average route diesel displacement of approximately 50% when running on dual fuel. Based on our current fuel costs, this equates to an impressive 25% to 30% net fuel savings of $1.40 to $1.70 per gallon over 100% diesel fuel.
