Getting Renewable Energy From Landfills with Archaea Energy
Keystone Landfill sits on more than 700 acres. It stretches into two boroughs: Dunmore and Throop. For many years residents have questioned the landfill’s operation. Air quality is a top concern.
For nearly two years, Archaea Energy has been building a $130 million renewable natural gas processing facility on site, under a gas right agreement with Keystone. Archaea Energy will be doing the same thing at Waste Management Alliance Landfill.
Once it is all processed, Archaea teamed up with UGI with a pipeline interconnection allowing area customers to benefit while reducing emissions into the air by 90 percent according to the company.
Greenlane Renewables Signs Over $7 Million in New System Supply Contracts
Greenlane Renewables Inc. announced it has signed two new biogas upgrading system supply contracts valued in total at $7.1 million (Canadian dollars) for separate renewable natural gas projects. Order fulfillment by Greenlane for both projects will commence immediately.
The first awarded contract is for the supply of a biogas upgrading system for a dairy farm RNG project in the State of Nebraska. The second contract is for a landfill gas-to-RNG project in Brazil with one of the country's largest landfill operators, Orizon Valorizacao de Residuos. Greenlane will supply its water wash system to upgrade the landfill gas to low carbon RNG.
UGI Adds Renewable Natural Gas to its Supply Portfolio
In Fiscal 2021, UGI Utilities, Inc. signed an interconnect agreement with Archaea Energy to accept delivery of RNG produced from the Keystone Landfill in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, into its natural gas pipeline that serves its distribution system. Once fully operational, the recently completed interconnect is capable of accommodating up to 5.3 billion cubic feet of RNG supply each year, making this the largest current RNG supply point in the United States to date.
Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Retooled for RNG
Verbio North America says it will more than double the capacity of its plant in central Iowa to produce renewable natural gas from corn stover, and it plans to begin production of corn ethanol in the final months of the year. The facility was the first of three plants in the nation to return to biofuel production after faltering as a producer of cellulosic ethanol, made from grasses, woody plants, and crop residue.
Expanded London Biogas Company Now Canada’s Largest Food-Waste Diversion Plant
A London company that turns organic waste into fuel has expanded at its plant, making it the largest food-waste diversion plant in Canada.
StormFisher has built a third facility at its south London site, along Green Valley Road near the Hwy. 401, to make more fuel out of waste from across the region. The new facility, built in partnership with Generate, a sustainable infrastructure company, will increase the company’s food intake capacity by 30 per cent.
First WAGABOX(R) Landfill Gas to RNG Project in the US Confirmed
Waga Energy is joining forces with Steuben County, New York, on an RNG project at the county's Bath landfill. The RNG produced will be injected in the local grid and used as a biofuel to decarbonize mobility. The Steuben County landfill will be the first in the US to adopt Waga Energy's WAGABOX(R) technology, already in use at ten landfills with an additional eleven facilities forthcoming in Europe and North America.
Archaea Energy Announces Successful Startup of Project Assai RNG Facility
Archaea Energy announced the successful start-up of Project Assai, an RNG facility located at the Keystone Sanitary Landfill in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. Assai is now the highest capacity operational RNG facility in the world.

Constellation to Supply Renewable Natural Gas to ANG’s CNG Stations
Constellation announced a 10-year agreement in which it will provide renewable natural gas to American Natural Gas, LLC to supply its CNG stations nationwide. The deal is made possible through a separate long-term offtake agreement between Constellation and project developer, The Landfill Group, in partnership with LS Power. Through this transaction, Constellation will procure biomethane from The Landfill Group’s Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency landfill biogas production facility in Iowa.
SJI And REV LNG Break Ground On Four RNG Facilities In Michigan
Last week, South Jersey Industries and development partner, REV LNG broke ground on renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities at four Michigan-based dairy farms, marking the partners' first series of renewable energy projects to break ground outside of the Northeast region.
The projects will include constructing 2M gallon anaerobic digesters and related RNG facilities to capture methane produced by cow manure at each of the four farms. The projects will also entail implementing equipment that cleans the digester-produced biogas, transforming it into commercial-grade pipeline-quality RNG.
