Joining the push for carbon-neutrality, Southern California Gas Company said that it has contributed about $650,000 to researching new technology that would capture carbon dioxide from the air while also collecting water that can be reused for irrigation.
According to a company statement, the testing that's planned will provide insights into the technology's efficiency and operating costs as it's eyed for possible wider deployment.
Archaea Holdings and NW Natural Sign 21-Year RNG Supply Deal
Archaea Energy Inc. (Archaea) has announced that its subsidiary Archaea Holdings, LLC has entered into a long-term RNG purchase and sale agreement with Northwest Natural Gas Company (NW Natural).
Under the terms of the agreement, NW Natural will purchase the environmental attributes generated by Archaea related to up to one million MMBtu of RNG annually from its portfolio of RNG production facilities for a fixed fee for a period of 21 years.
The agreement will commence in early 2022, with the full annual quantity beginning in 2025. The RNG produced by Archaea for this long-term partnership is expected to have a positive impact through avoided methane emissions at US landfills and displacement of conventional natural gas.
Clean Energy and bp Broaden Joint Venture Focused on RNG Project Development Aimed at Delivering Lower Carbon Intensity Fuels
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. and bp announced that its renewable natural gas (RNG) joint venture will build on previously announced plans to finance and develop new projects at dairy farms, starting in the Midwest.
Located in South Dakota and Iowa, the dairy farms, with more than 30,000 cows, have the estimated potential to convert the methane produced from waste into more than seven million gallons of RNG annually.
Enchanted Rock Announces Net-Zero Microgrids Using RNG
Enchanted Rock, the leading provider of electrical resiliency microgrids announced that its customers now have the option to choose RNG to achieve net-zero or negative carbon emissions.
This advancement represents Enchanted Rock’s history of clean energy innovation dating back to 2012 when the company pioneered the use of cleaner generators beginning with EPA Tier 4 diesel and further evolution to ultra-clean natural gas. Enchanted Rock has already reduced the local pollutants of backup power solutions by over 99 percent and carbon intensity by 10 percent. With this announcement, Enchanted Rock will now reduce carbon intensity of backup power by 100 percent.
Southwest Gas Celebrates New RNG Facility
Southwest Gas is excited to announce its partnership on another RNG project. With the grand opening of the Sunoma Renewable Natural Gas Project (Sunoma) at the Paloma Dairy in Gila Bend, Ariz., Southwest Gas will play an intergral role in bringing RNG to market through their system.
Sunoma will prevent 54,000 metric tons of carbon-equivalent emissions from entering the atmosphere annually, which is the equivalent of removing greenhouse gas emissions created by 11,744 passenger cars each year.
Opinion: New York, Wake Up on Methane Emissions
Methane has climbed the national and global climate policy agendas, and has been much talked about in the corridors of COP26 in Glasgow. Meanwhile, implementation of New York’s landmark climate bill, the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) is still in its early stages.
It mandates an 85% cut in New York’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050. To meet that target, Gov. Hochul signaled she wants to reduce fossil natural gas in the state’s energy mix. That’s because natural gas is mostly methane, a powerful warming agent more than 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years. We’ll need to cut New York’s methane emissions rapidly to meet the CLCPA goal.
Bloom Energy Makes Biogas Debut
California-based Bloom Energy said it had made its debut in biogas with the deployment of a fuel cell meant to process dairy cow manure into a form of renewable energy.
A 1 MW fuel cell was deployed at the Bar 20 Dairy Farms in California.
The company said the skid would remove any impurities before biogas containing up to 65% methane would be used for what it considered a renewable form of electricity utilising an electrochemical process driven by solid-oxide fuel cells.
NW Natural Forms Subsidiary to Supply RNG Nationwide
Northwest Natural Holding Co. is expanding its role in the growing renewable natural gas market with the formation of a subsidiary focused on supplying renewable fuels to utilities and commercial, industrial, and transportation sector customers across the U.S.
The utility operator announced the new nonregulated business line, NW Natural Renewables, would provide fuels processed from existing waste streams and renewable energy sources. The company said it would lean into the insights and capabilities that it has developed through its energy transition initiatives.
Xebec Acquires Colorado-Based UECompression to Establish North America’s Leading RNG and Hydrogen Manufacturing Facility
Xebec Adsorption Inc. announced it has closed the acquisition of Colorado-based UECompression (“UEC”), a designer and builder of custom air and gas compressor solutions for power generation, industrial and energy applications.
The acquisition provides Xebec with a cost-effective and timely pathway towards expanding production capacity five-fold for standardized renewable gas systems while supporting UEC’s legacy business as the operation continues its energy transition. In addition, Xebec’s global manufacturing footprint is further optimized by bringing European gas generation products such as Hy.GEN to the U.S. and focuses UEC’s facility on containerized and skid-mounted renewable energy systems. The acquisition also increases the Cleantech Service Network coverage by six states (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North & South Dakota and Nebraska) to meet the increasing need for local service and support as the demand for standardized RNG and hydrogen systems accelerates.
SJI, REV LNG Announce Construction of RNG Facility at Connecticut's Largest Dairy Farm
SJI and development partner REV LNG, LLC announced the construction of a 2MM gallon anaerobic digester at Oakridge Dairy, Connecticut’s largest dairy farm. This $12M RNG facility is a pivotal clean energy venture for SJI that will enable Elizabethtown natural gas customers to utilize renewable energy.
Expected to be operational by September 2022, the anaerobic digester will capture raw methane and other greenhouse gases produced by manure. The project will also include constructing additional equipment to transform the collected biogas into commercial-grade, pipeline-quality renewable natural gas that will be integrated into the distribution system of SJI’s subsidiary, Elizabethtown Gas.
