Logistics Firm Adds RNG Trucks to Fleet via Adopt-A-Port Initiative
RoadEX, a major California drayage company, is adding 16 new natural gas trucks to its fleet through Chevron and Clean Energy Fuels’ Adopt-A-Port programme.
In switching from diesel fuel to RNG, RoadEX has committed to approximately 960,000 gallons of RNG over the contract term.
In May, Chevron invested an additional $20 million (€16.9 million) in Clean Energy’s Adopt-A-Port initiative and has now invested a total of $28 million (€23.7 million) in the scheme. The initiative provides truck operators – large fleets and owner-operators – serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with cleaner, carbon-negative RNG to reduce emissions.
Largest Renewable Natural Gas Project of Its Kind Implements Manure-to-Energy Technology Across Northern Missouri, Celebrates Construction Completion Ahead of Joint Venture's 10-Year Anniversary
Monarch Bioenergy, a joint venture between Smithfield Foods, Inc. and Roeslein Alternative Energy (RAE), has finished installing manure-to-energy technology on nearly all of Smithfield's Northern Missouri hog finishing farms.
The new technology captures methane emissions and converts them into carbon-negative renewable natural gas (RNG) to power homes, vehicles and businesses.
"We are delighted to reach this exciting milestone, which is a significant step toward fulfilling our commitment to implement this transformative, cutting-edge technology on the vast majority of our finishing farms in multiple states," said Kraig Westerbeek, vice president of Smithfield Renewables for Smithfield Foods. "Our Monarch Bioenergy manure-to-energy projects are making a significant environmental impact and remove 25 times more emissions from the atmosphere than are emitted during the clean energy's end use. Because of this, they are key projects in our Smithfield Renewables portfolio of innovative renewable energy and carbon reduction efforts across our operations."
Greenlane Renewables Signs CA$12.8 Million in Biogas Upgrading System Supply Contracts for RNG Projects in the United States
Greenlane Renewables Inc. (“Greenlane”) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd., has signed a total of $12.8 million (US$10.2 million) in contracts for renewable natural gas (“RNG”) projects in the United States. One of the contracts involves the supply by Greenlane of its membrane separation biogas upgrading system for a project owned by an international energy company. This is a repeat order within eight months from the last one. Greenlane is also announcing contracts signed for the supply of two biogas upgrading systems, one each for separate RNG dairy farm projects in the States of Wisconsin and New York developed and owned by a proven leader in the waste-to-energy industry in the U.S. These two projects will each utilize Greenlane’s pressure swing adsorption (“PSA”) biogas upgrading system. The identification of both project owners has been withheld at this time. Order fulfilment by Greenlane will start immediately on all three contracts.

Upon project completion, NW Iowa RNG is estimated to produce approximately 355,000 MMBtu of RNG per year. The RNG is expected to be sold into the California market under dispensing agreements bp has in place with Clean Energy Fuels Corp., the largest fueling infrastructure in the U.S. for RNG.
NW Natural and Element Markets Team up to Deliver Benefits of Renewable Natural Gas to Customers
NW Natural, a subsidiary of NW Natural Holding Company, has signed an agreement with Element Markets to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) for Oregon customers as part of the RNG program instituted under Oregon Senate Bill 98.
This marks the second RNG contract for NW Natural under the landmark bill, which supports renewable energy procurement and investment by natural gas utilities.
With the addition of this most recent contract, NW Natural has signed agreements with options to purchase or develop RNG totaling about 2% of NW Natural’s annual sales volume in Oregon, enough to heat about 36,000 homes.
Provincial Rule Changes Could Boost Biodigesters
It may become easier to install and use on-farm biodigesters due to recent regulatory changes implemented by the Ontario government. The annual volume allowance has quadrupled and limitations on types of materials from off-farm sources have been eased. Limits are also being eased for on-farm source materials.
‘There’s No Net Zero Without Biogas’
“There’s no net zero without biogas” has been a motto for the anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry for some time now – both in the UK and globally.
First used at the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA)’s National Conference in 2019, it captures the significant role that AD can play in helping the UK achieve its ambition to reach net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 – a role demonstrated in ADBA’s 2019 report Biomethane: the Pathway to 2030.
Dairy Farmers Have Incredible Sustainability Story, and Consumers Need to Hear It
AHoard’s Dairyman webinar welcomed multiple guests for a panel on dairy and sustainability to show just what dairy farmers have been doing across the globe in the name of environmental conservation and sustainable food supply. They said sustainability includes a lot more than just the environment, though – it’s also about building a sustainable business model for alternative conservation practices.
Guests included Robin White, professor of animal and poultry sciences at Virginia Tech; Marilyn Hershey, dairy farmer and board chair at Dairy Management Inc; Jamie Vander Molen, vice president of sustainability issues and outreach at manure management company Newtrient; and Chris Wolf, agriculture economist at Cornell University.
"Dairy has such an incredible story when we’re talking about sustainability," White said. "The environmental aspects of dairy sustainability go well beyond just carbon. They include things like our interaction with water, soil, land, biodiversity, ecosystem services. Incorporating all of those elements of environmentalism into our definitions and quantifications of sustainability is really the direction we’re headed."
EIA: United States Produced Lowest CO2 Emissions Since 1983
According to the latest Monthly Energy Review from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2020, the United States produced the least CO2 emissions from energy in nearly 40 years.
In 2020, the nation produced 4.6 billion metric tons (Bmt) of CO2, representing an 11 percent decrease from 2019 levels — the largest recorded annual plunge. As the country continues to open back up, the EIA expects this to turn around this year, with CO2 emissions expected to grow by 0.3 Bmt in 2021.
