Clean Energy Signs Multi-Year Contract with LA Metro for More Than 47 Million Gallons of Renewable Natural Gas
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced that the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has signed a new agreement for an estimated 47.5 million gallons of its renewable natural gas (RNG) to fuel the nation’s largest transit bus fleet.
This agreement will mark the completion of Metro’s 5-year goal to transition its diesel fleet to cleaner, low-carbon fuel, with 2,400 buses now running on RNG—the first renewable and commercially available vehicle fuel made entirely from organic waste.
“Metro is committed to ensuring a seamless path towards a carbon neutral future,” said Metro’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Cris Liban. “Our use of RNG alongside our ultra-low NOx engines on our existing CNG fleet provides the most cost-effective, equitable, and clean air strategy as we continue to transition to a 100% zero-emissions bus fleet by 2030 and a net zero-emissions agency by 2050.”
Chevron May Not Be an Oil-First Company in 2040, CEO Says
Chevron has built a $170 billion fossil fuels empire that has made the 141-year-old company synonymous with the oil-and-gas industry.
But the climate crisis is forcing oil companies large and small to rethink their once-reliable business models.
While US oil companies have been far more reluctant than their European rivals to shift away from their cash cows, even Chevron CEO Michael Wirth concedes his company may look different in 2040.
Amazon Orders More than 1,000 Natgas-Powered Engines for U.S. Fleet
Amazon.com Inc has ordered more than 1,000 truck engines that run on compressed natural gas as it tests ways to shift its U.S. fleet away from heavier polluting trucks, the company told Reuters on Friday.
The coronavirus pandemic caused delivery activity to surge in 2020, with truck volumes exceeding 2019 levels on average while passenger car traffic fell. But that increase in road activity means more pollution, as heavier-duty trucks emit higher levels of greenhouse gases than passenger vehicles.
Marvel Power Group Joins RNG Coalition
The Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas has welcomed the Marvel Power Group to its membership. Today, Marvel joins 280 companies and organizations across North America dedicated to the sustainable development, deployment and utilization of renewable natural gas so that present and future generations will have access to domestic, renewable clean fuel and energy. As part of its commitment, Marvel's principals will serve on the RNG Coalition's Renewable Power, Renewable Gas, Sustainability and Consumer Access & Outreach Advisory Boards.
Marvel Power is a woman-owned advisory and brokerage platform focused on structuring high-volume, financeable biogas offtake contracts and investment agreements. With over 25 years of tangible transactional experience across power, gas and technology, Marvel is at the forefront of deal innovation, ESG agendas and corporate stewardship. As a creative partner and liquidity provider, Marvel aims to drive fuel source diversification in a measured, sustainable way.
ACT Commodities and Bluesource Complete First Renewable Thermal Transaction Using State-of-the-Art Tracking Tool
Today, ACT Commodities Inc. (ACT) and Blue Source, LLC (Bluesource) announced the completion of the first Renewable Thermal Certificate (RTC) voluntary corporate claim on the M-RETS® platform, an industry leading tracking tool for renewable certificates. Thanks to this partnership, ACT became the first company to retire RTCs on behalf of a Fortune 50 corporate client to meet voluntary sustainability goals. This first-of-its-kind transaction represents a new option for corporate clients to utilize renewable natural gas to lower their carbon footprints.
RTCs are a new tool that represent the environmental attributes associated with renewable natural gas and other renewable thermal commodities like green hydrogen.
Verbio to Open Straw Biomethane Plants in India, US This Year
Verbio will open two straw biomethane plants in India and the US this year.
In a statement released on 29 January discussing the company’s 2019/2020 financial year results, Verbio said the market conditions for its expansion projects in Asia and North America are “extremely positive”, and revealed the new facilities will open this autumn.
Claus Sauter, CEO of Verbio, said: “On the one hand, the Indian Government is promoting the expansion of gas mobility as a cheap alternative to expensive fossil fuels in the country. On the other hand, it urgently needs and wants to contain the problem of massive air pollution caused by the large-scale burning of waste straw in the fields. Our straw biomethane technology is so far the only concrete answer to both challenges.”
General Motors, the Largest U.S. Automaker, Plans to be Carbon Neutral by 2040
Today, GM announced that it plans to become carbon neutral in its global products and operations by 2040 and has committed to setting science-based targetsⁱⁱ to achieve carbon neutrality. The company has also signed the Business Ambition Pledge for 1.5⁰C, an urgent call to action from a global coalition of UN agencies, business and industry leaders.
“General Motors is joining governments and companies around the globe working to establish a safer, greener and better world,” said Mary Barra, GM Chairman and CEO. “We encourage others to follow suit and make a significant impact on our industry and on the economy as a whole.”
Saudi Arabia Aims to Become Next Germany of Renewable Energy
Saudi Arabia wants to emulate Germany’s success with renewable energy and be a pioneer in hydrogen production, as the world’s biggest oil exporter seeks to diversify its economy.
“We will be another Germany when it comes to renewables,” Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said Wednesday on a panel at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh. “We will be pioneering.”
The kingdom is working with many countries on green and blue hydrogen projects and those to capture carbon emissions, he said.
How Biden's Orders Hit EVs, Oil and Clean Energy
The Biden administration released a sweeping set of climate and energy actions yesterday that aim to block oil leasing on federal lands, create thousands of new clean energy jobs and give nearly every federal agency a role in tackling emissions.
The executive order outlines new policies on electric vehicles, clean electricity and renewable power, and calls for slashing oil methane emissions.
8% of Gas Consumed in EU by 2030 Should be Biomethane, Says New Policy Paper
A new policy paper by the Gas for Climate consortium has been published, providing an analysis-based rationale on why an 11% renewable gas target is needed to meet the EU’s climate goals.
The paper follows last year’s Gas for Climate Gas Decarbonisation Pathways 2020-2050 report, which showed how additional policy measures are needed to scale-up biomethane and green & blue hydrogen, which are all needed to meet the EU’s climate targets.
To ensure a consistent market ramp-up of green hydrogen and biomethane across the EU, the envisioned 11% target is supported by two binding sub-targets for green hydrogen and biomethane. At least 8% of the gas consumed in the EU by 2030 should be biomethane, and at least 3% should be green hydrogen.
