SoCalGas Now Dispensing California-Produced Renewable Natural Gas at its Vehicle Fueling Stations for the First Time

Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today announced it is for the first time dispensing California-produced renewable natural gas (RNG) at many of the natural gas fueling stations it operates across the state. The utility recently began purchasing RNG from Pixley-based Calgren Dairy Fuels (Calgren), which captures the greenhouse gas-producing manure from dairy farms and turns it into RNG, a renewable fuel. SoCalGas has dispensed 100% RNG from out-of-state sources at its fueling stations for a year. Calgren's facility is part of a rapidly growing biomethane industry in California and is currently the largest dairy biogas operation in the U.S.

Photos of the fueling stations and Calgren's dairy digester facility are available here. A video demonstrating RNG's ability to reduce California's transportation emissions is available here.

Fleet Leaders Share Four Recommendations for Driving Toward Zero Emissions

The transportation industry is at a turning point: Ever-more ambitious climate goals are combining with the dropping cost of electric and low-carbon vehicles to make sustainable fleets more of a reality.

It’s still early days, but public and private sector organizations alike — all recognized on our top 25 most sustainable fleets list this week — are making the transition, and solving thorny infrastructure and workforce challenges along the way.

"It's tough to do, it takes a huge concert of effort to do it, but it’s been able to happen," said Philip Saunders, deputy division director of the green fleet program for the city of Seattle, at VERGE 20 conference.

Repurposing Land in Alberta May Represent Alternative Solutions with a Number of Environmental and Economic Benefits

The current path to land use reclamation of legacy oil and gas sites in Alberta is often a long one, imposing specific requirements on regulatees during the suspension, abandonment, remediation and reclamation stages of the process. Companies often hold wells in abandonment status to avoid or delay clean-up costs and many such companies are struggling financially. Despite having undergone reform, this regime has resulted in approximately 97,000 inactive wells, 71,000 abandoned wells, and 2950 orphan wells.

However, there are potential land uses that should be considered in respect of assessing (or reassessing) the status of these wells and associated infrastructure within the reclamation process. These new and emerging land uses may represent alternative solutions with a number of environmental and economic benefits.

Brightmark Partners with New York Dairy Farms to Produce RNG

Brightmark, the global waste solutions provider, today announced that it has partnered with three New York dairy farms on the Helios Project, the latest in a series of renewable natural gas (RNG) projects the company has launched over the past two years. The project is part of the recently announced joint venture Brightmark RNG Holdings LLC, a Brightmark platform in partnership with Chevron U.S.A. Inc.

Gardeau Crest Farms located in Western New York and Lawnhurst Farms and Willet Dairy, located in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, have each signed supply agreements with Brightmark indicating their intent to provide the company with dairy manure from their herds that will serve as feedstock for the three existing anaerobic digesters on the farms. The digesters will capture, extract, and clean the methane in the manure, then convert it into RNG and inject it into a nearby gas pipeline for distribution.
